{"id":841,"date":"2004-10-06T10:59:26","date_gmt":"2004-10-06T17:59:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2004\/10\/reading_the_tea_leaves\/"},"modified":"2004-10-06T10:59:26","modified_gmt":"2004-10-06T17:59:26","slug":"reading_the_tea_leaves","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2004\/10\/reading_the_tea_leaves.html","title":{"rendered":"READING THE TEA  LEAVES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Will voters ever get to see what those guys were scribbling so furiously on their<br \/>\nnotepads?&nbsp;Our guess is Mr. Sourpuss was doodling his Republican mantra, &#8220;significant<br \/>\nprogress,&#8221; and reminding himself not to curl his lip or spit too much venom. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Although he was aiming for <I>gravitas<\/I> (that much overused word), he managed instead<br \/>\nto throw a &#8220;modulated tantrum,&#8221; <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A10303-2004Oct6.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>Tom Shales writes<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, in a debate<br \/>\nthat &#8220;was like a tea party for pitbulls.&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Our guess is Mr. Smiley was doodling his Democratic counter-mantra, &#8220;four more years of<br \/>\nthe same,&#8221; and notes to himself not to smile too much, which he succeeded in doing, as though<br \/>\nthat might prove he had the kind of <I>gravitas<\/I> (much overused word) to qualify him for the<br \/>\nsecond-highest office in the land without resorting to a dyspeptic demeanor or snide remarks.<br \/>\n<\/P><br \/>\n<P>In fact, he succeeded in not being just a pretty boy. He&nbsp;<A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/10\/05\/politics\/campaign\/06dtext-full.html?pagewanted=1&#038;o\nref=login\"><B><FONT color=#003399>put Mr. Sourpuss on the defensive<\/FONT><\/B><\/A><br \/>\nand kept the pressure on right from the start: &#8220;Mr. Vice President, you are still not being straight<br \/>\nwith the American people,&#8221; he said, then rounded on him:<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>I mean the reality you and George Bush continue to tell people, first, that<br \/>\nthings are going well in Iraq. [WHAM!]&nbsp;The American people don&#8217;t need us to explain this<br \/>\nto them. [BAM!] They see it on their television every single day. [THANK YOU,<br \/>\nMA&#8217;AM!]<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>What was Mr. Sourpuss&#8217;s comeback? <\/P><br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>We&#8217;ve made significant progress in Iraq. [LAME!] We&#8217;ve stood up a new<br \/>\ngovernment &#8230; But the point of success in Iraq will be reached when we have turned governance<br \/>\nover to the Iraqi people, they&#8217;ve been able to establish a democratic government. They&#8217;re well on<br \/>\ntheir way to doing that. [LAME AGAIN!] They&#8217;ll have free elections next January for the first<br \/>\ntime in history. <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/boingboing.net\/text\/fassihi.txt\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>[WHO&#8217;S HE KIDDING?]<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> We<br \/>\nalso are actively, rapidly training Iraqis to take on the security responsibility.&nbsp;[THAT&#8217;S<br \/>\nWHY INTERIM PRIME MINISTER ALLAWI SAID YESTERDAY THAT IRAQ&#8217;S POLICE<br \/>\nFORCE <A class=INLINE\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20041001.shtml#88485\"\ntarget='NEW\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>CAN&#8217;T QUELL THE<br \/>\nINSURGENCY<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>.] Those two steps are crucial to success in Iraq. They&#8217;re<br \/>\nwell in hand, well under way. [TRIPLY LAME.] And I&#8217;m confident that in fact we&#8217;ll get the job<br \/>\ndone. [IF HE SAYS SO.]<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>For me that pretty much settled the issue of who won the debate. Others apparently agreed.<br \/>\n<A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/3036697\/\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>MSNBC.com reported<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> earlier this morning that 1.2<br \/>\nmillion&nbsp;users&nbsp;of their site replied to the question of who won, and that 63% said John<br \/>\nEdwards, compared with 37% who said Dick Cheney. <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/ELECTION\/2004\/special\/president\/debates\/press.pundits\/results.html\n\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>CNN.com reported<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> that<br \/>\n252,963 of theirs graded Edwards B+ for content and B+ for delivery, compared with Cheney&#8217;s<br \/>\ngrades of B- for content and B- for delivery. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Those are not scientific polls. But <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/stories\/2004\/10\/05\/opinion\/polls\/main647648.shtml\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>CBS News polled<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> a nationally<br \/>\nrepresentative sample of 178 debate watchers who described themselves as &#8220;uncommitted voters&#8221;<br \/>\nand found that 41% said Edwards won, compared to 28% who said Cheney won. The rest, 31%,<br \/>\nsaid it was a tie.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Meanwhile, The Washington Post is running a <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-srv\/politics\/polls\/2004tracking\/track100504.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>Daily Tracking Poll<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> of voter<br \/>\npreferences that is so scientific it makes my eyes glaze over. If you can make head or tail of it,<br \/>\ncongratulations. Whoever compiled those stats is one helluva serious pollster.
