Here are some <A\nclass=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.nmai.si.edu\/opening\/openingimages\/opening_images.html#\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>images from the opening<br \/>\nceremony<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>. The <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nmai.si.edu\/opening\/festival\/\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>First<br \/>\nAmericans Festival<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> continues through Sunday.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>A friend writes:<\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>On Monday, I just happened to be enroute home from a weekend trip and<br \/>\nchanged planes in Memphis, where more than a few participants boarded my flight to D.C. I was<br \/>\nreally struck by how much this museum means to them. This may sound corny, but I was moved<br \/>\nto tears by their enthusiasm and pride. The museum was 15 years in the making and it will be the<br \/>\nSmithsonian&#8217;s last museum. The last museum for the first Americans.<br \/>\n<P>About <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/news\/2004\/09\/0914_040915_indian_museum_opening.\nhtml\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>20,000 Native Americans<br \/>\nmarched<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> in the Procession of Nations on opening day. It is said to be the<br \/>\nlargest gathering of the tribes in history. Most were dressed in full tribal regalia as they walked<br \/>\ntogether to the dedication of the museum. The word &#8220;awesome&#8221; &#8212; these days completely<br \/>\noverused &#8212; really applies here. It will take more than a museum to heal their wounds, but what a<br \/>\ngreat start.<\/P><\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Roughly half of the $219-million museum ($119 million) was funded by the federal<br \/>\ngovernment. Private contributions made up the rest of the funding. &#8220;Three tribes with thriving<br \/>\ncasino operations together raised $30 million,&#8221; the <A class=INLINE\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.csmonitor.com\/2004\/0923\/p11s01-ussc.html\" target='NEW\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>Christian Science Monitor<\/FONT> <FONT\ncolor=#003399>reported<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>. Some 8,000 artifacts from 24 tribes, representing<br \/>\n10,000 years from the pre-Columbian era through the beginning of the 20th century, will be on<br \/>\npermanent exhibit. Overall holdings include 800,000 objects and 125,000 photographs.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/wire\/Politics\/ap20040923_557.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Not all Native Americans have embraced the new<br \/>\nmuseum,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> however: <\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>The American Indian Movement, an activist group, issued a statement<br \/>\nclaiming the museum failed to display the tragic history of the U.S. government&#8217;s &#8220;holocaust&#8221;<br \/>\nagainst the nations and peoples of the Americas.<\/BLOCKQUOTE><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We should have mentioned the National Museum of the American Indian, which opened Tuesday in Washington, D.C.
