Is Sen. Kennedy and\/or his staff reading Straight<br \/>\nUp? Doubtful. But I couldn&#8217;t help noticing Kennedy&#8217;s reference to the &#8220;<A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/09\/28\/politics\/campaign\/28kennedy.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>rhetorical double-twisting back<br \/>\nflips<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> President Bush performs&#8221; in a speech he gave yesterday. He also called<br \/>\nour Nincompoop in Chief &#8220;the world record-holder for flip-flops.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Earlier this month,&nbsp;an&nbsp;item here,&nbsp;<A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20040901.shtml#86639\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>ON FLIP-FLOPS AND SHARP<br \/>\nSHIFTS<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, suggested news ledes to reflect reality, such as: &#8220;President Bush did<br \/>\na triple somersault belly flop &#8230;&#8221; and &#8220;President Bush yesterday did a back flip &#8230;&#8221; and &#8220;President<br \/>\nBush reversed himself in a belly flop &#8230;&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>This was in answer to the question: &#8220;How come when the ninny makes a U-turn, does a back<br \/>\nflip, lands a belly flop, or pulls his head out of his ass, it&#8217;s called crossing a bridge, making a<br \/>\nconcession, embracing a new position, or acknowledging a recommendation?&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Whomever Kennedy and his staff are reading, it&#8217;s&nbsp;good to know they get it.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><B>Postscript:<\/B> In re: yesterday&#8217;s <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20040901.shtml#87911\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>FACIAL MANEUVERS<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, have a<br \/>\nlook at <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/09\/28\/opinion\/28krugman.html?hp\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>Paul Krugman&#8217;s column<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> this<br \/>\nmorning about the upcoming presidential debate and &#8220;the temptation [for reporters] to revert to<br \/>\ndrama criticism &#8212; to emphasize how the candidates looked and acted&#8221; instead of their substance.<br \/>\nHe cites <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/09\/27\/opinion\/27clymer_.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>Adam Clymer&#8217;s op-ed piece<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>.<br \/>\nEverybody&#8217;s all over the subject.
