Tom Friedman<br \/>\nwas back Sunday with a <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/10\/03\/opinion\/03friedman.html?oref=login\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>bright thought<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>: &#8220;Each time the<br \/>\nBush team had to choose between doing the right thing in the war on terrorism or siding with its<br \/>\npolitical base and ideology, it chose its base and ideology.&#8221; And he had a clever formulation:<br \/>\n&#8220;While the Bush people applied the Powell Doctrine in the Midwest&#8221; [&#8216;overwhelming force<br \/>\nwithout mercy, based on a strategy of shock and awe at the Republican Convention&#8217;], they applied<br \/>\nthe Rumsfield Doctrine in the Middle East [&#8216;just enough troops to lose&#8217;].&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Based on <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0195176855\/qid=1096892507\/sr=1-1\/ref=\nsr_1_1\/104-7952028-8954301?v=glance&#038;s=books\" targeet='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;Hatchet Jobs and Hardball: The Oxford Dictionary of Political<br \/>\nSlang,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> Tom Kuntz whipped up a terrific little piece, <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/10\/03\/weekinreview\/03word.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Slang Only a Velcroid Would<br \/>\nLove.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> It begins: &#8220;Hey all you twinkies and snollygosters, can the bafflegab,<br \/>\nwill ya? Say &#8216;spin&#8217; or &#8216;bounce&#8217; or &#8216;expectations game&#8217; one more time and we&#8217;ll sic the barking heads<br \/>\non you, understand?&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>And in case you missed <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20040901.shtml#87631\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>this<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> or <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20040901.shtml#88142\"><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>this<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, don&#8217;t miss <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/10\/03\/weekinreview\/03brod.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Just Pet the Goose, Arnold.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A><br \/>\nJohn Broder points out some relevant facts: Besides agreeing to outlaw the force feeding of ducks<br \/>\nand geese for the production of foie gras by 2012, the Culifornia governator signed a bill<br \/>\n&#8220;prohibiting the declawing of cats used in entertainment.&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<P>But Ahnold couldn&#8217;t find it in his steroid heart to sign a bill providing an&nbsp;&#8220;increase in<br \/>\nthe state&#8217;s minimum wage, saying it would make the state less competitive with its neighbors.&#8221; In<br \/>\naddition:<\/P><br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>He killed a bill that would have required cities and counties to prepare<br \/>\neconomic impact reports on the building of giant Wal-Marts and other superstores. He vetoed<br \/>\nstringent new pollution rules for the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, saying they would<br \/>\nslow growth at the nation&#8217;s busiest ports. He knocked down labor-backed bills to stop the<br \/>\noutsourcing of jobs and state purchasing. [And] he vetoed a bill to set up a state Web site to help<br \/>\nCalifornians find cheaper prescription drugs in Canada.<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>He&#8217;s what&#8217;s called a <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/c\/a\/2003\/08\/14\/MN40816.DTL\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>liberal Republican<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>.<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the evidence of his first column in two months, the time off revived him.
