Yet even if<br \/>\nthey are, it doesn&#8217;t matter, <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.richardreeves.com\/columns\/latest.html\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>according to Richard Reeves<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, who writes: &#8220;Forget about this<br \/>\npresidential election for the next four weeks. The conventions are over and, as things stand now,<br \/>\nthe next major wave of political events will begin with the first televised debate between President<br \/>\nBush and Senator John Kerry on September 30 in Coral Gables, Florida. If history is a guide, the<br \/>\nelection will be settled that night. Or, it will be settled in the second and third debates on October<br \/>\n8 in St. Louis and October 13 in Tempe, Arizona.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>I trust Reeves. <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0671892894\/qid=1094649300\/sr=ka-2\/ref=pd\n_ka_2\/104-7952028-8954301\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>He&#8217;s<br \/>\nexperienced<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, and <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0743227190\/qid=1094649300\/sr=ka-1\/ref=pd\n_ka_1\/104-7952028-8954301\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>he&#8217;s<br \/>\nsmart<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, and <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0674616235\/qid=1094649300\/sr=1-3\/ref=\nsr_1_3\/104-7952028-8954301?v=glance&#038;s=books\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>he knows what he&#8217;s talking about<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>. But if he&#8217;s right, that<br \/>\nmeans until the debates come around the rest of us are just flapping our lips.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Postscript:<\/STRONG> And yet &#8230; and yet &#8230; <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.democracynow.org\/article.pl?sid=04\/09\/08\/1422239\"\ntarget='new\"'><STRONG><FONT color=#003399>listen to Patrick<br \/>\nCoburn<\/FONT><\/STRONG><\/A>, of the London Independent, speaking from Baghdad to<br \/>\nDemocracy Now&#8217;s Amy Goodman about the significance of the U.S. death toll and&nbsp;the<br \/>\nintensification of the war in Iraq.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>&#8220;We look too much at the number of dead,&#8221; he says. &#8220;We should also look at the number of<br \/>\nwounded &#8212; 7,000. And many of these people have suffered terrible wounds, and they would have<br \/>\ndied in previous wars. People who&#8217;ve lost all their limbs, people who will never move out of<br \/>\nwheelchairs in future. &#8230;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>&#8220;What&#8217;s very noticeable, and maybe hasn&#8217;t impressed the outside world, but it&#8217;s a war on two<br \/>\nfronts. American soldiers are dying at the hands of Shiite Muslims, which wasn&#8217;t true six months<br \/>\nago, as well as these continuing guerrilla attacks by Sunni Muslims.&#8221; Iraq, he says, &#8220;is now a much<br \/>\nmore potent base for militant Islamic groups than Afghanistan ever was.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Coburn&#8217;s report is devastating about other developments, too. If American voters put Dummy<br \/>\nBoy, Bunker Boy and Rummy Boy back in office for four more years, they can&#8217;t say they weren&#8217;t<br \/>\nwarned.<STRONG><\/STRONG><BR><\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is anybody listening?
