Bush is composed&nbsp;of photos of American soldiers who have died in Iraq. It is our version of <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/packages\/html\/national\/20040909_THOUSAND_GRAPHIC\/inde\nx_PICTURES.html\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;The Roster of the Dead,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>&nbsp;a two-and-a-half page spread of 900 photos published&nbsp;yesterday in The New York Times. We don&#8217;t know who created the&nbsp;GWB death mask. It came to us in g-mail &#8212;&nbsp;uncredited &#8212;&nbsp;from a friend.&nbsp;But here&#8217;s a fitting&nbsp;caption from <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/09\/10\/opinion\/10herbert.html\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>Bob Herbert&#8217;s column<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>&nbsp;this morning:&nbsp;&#8220;How many thousands more will have to die before we acknowledge that <ALT-CODE idsrc=\"nyt-per-pol\" value=\"Bush, George W\" \/>President Bush&#8217;s obsession with Iraq and Saddam Hussein has been a catastrophe for the United States?&#8221; And, he might have added, for the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p><STRONG>Postscript:<\/STRONG> Have a look at Mort Subiet&#8217;s <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.emptymirrorbooks.com\/thirdpage\/boothill.html\" target='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Boot Count,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> another staggering death roster. This one gains visual impact by scrolling through it. The faster you scroll, the more dazzling&nbsp;it&nbsp;is. Subiet gives&nbsp;overdue meaning to the phrase &#8220;boots on the ground.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>PPS:<\/strong> Dec. 28, 2007 &#8212; The Death Mask mosaic is the creation of Joe Wezorek, who blogs at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amleft.blogspot.com\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>American Leftist<\/strong><\/font><\/a>. He confirmed it the other day in an email. &#8220;I created the image in the spring of 2004,&#8221; Wezorek said. &#8220;It became something of a phenomenon at that time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what a Google search just turned up: The BBC <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/americas\/3652171.stm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>reported<\/strong><\/font><\/a> on the image in April 2004 in a news story about official Pentagon photos of the coffins of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq. The American Prospect interviewed Wezorek about the mosaic and published its story, <a href=\"http:\/\/h1.ripway.com\/joewez\/AmProsInt.html \" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>&#8220;The Faces of Honor, the Face of Shame,&#8221;<\/strong><\/font><\/a> in June. Wezorek also <a href=\"http:\/\/commonground.ca\/iss\/0407156\/about_the_cover.shtml\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>wrote<\/strong><\/font><\/a> about the image when it appeared on the cover of Common Ground in July (actually, a repeat of his <a href=\"http:\/\/amleft.blogspot.com\/2004_04_01_amleft_archive.html#10813433295590473\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>April 7 blogpost<\/strong><\/font><\/a>). A large version of the mosaic, which he called &#8220;War President,&#8221; was exhibited in a group show, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feldmangallery.com\/pages\/exhgroup\/exhfaceoff.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Face Off<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, at the Feldman Gallery in New York later that year (Oct. 23-Nov. 27).
