{"id":794,"date":"2004-09-11T11:32:39","date_gmt":"2004-09-11T18:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2004\/09\/911_and_the_election\/"},"modified":"2004-09-11T11:32:39","modified_gmt":"2004-09-11T18:32:39","slug":"911_and_the_election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2004\/09\/911_and_the_election.html","title":{"rendered":"9\/11 AND THE  ELECTION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>On the <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2004\/US\/09\/11\/911.anniversary\/index.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>third anniversary of 9\/11<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>, the<br \/>\nbest way for Americans to honor the dead is&nbsp;to look to the future&nbsp;by realizing that<br \/>\nthe upcoming presidential election will be a referendum not on the candidates for the White House<br \/>\nbut on the conscience and convictions of the electorate itself. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Will there be <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/09\/10\/opinion\/10fri1.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>no accountability on Abu<br \/>\nGhraib<\/FONT><\/B><\/A>&nbsp;from the Bush gang, for example, as has become apparent,<br \/>\nbecause voters do not have the moral spine to hold it responsible for&nbsp;the prevaricating<br \/>\n&#8220;miscalculations&#8221; in Iraq?<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Will American voters accept &#8212; and by accepting, <I>approve of<\/I> &#8212; the gang&#8217;s <A\nclass=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/09\/10\/opinion\/10krugman.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;pattern of dishonesty&#8221;<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> (Paul<br \/>\nKrugman&#8217;s term)&nbsp;in everything from character issues like the Maximum Leader&#8217;s sketchy<br \/>\nevasions about his own military service to policy issues like the cooked books&nbsp;of&nbsp;the<br \/>\nfederal budget deficit?<\/P><br \/>\n<P>American voters ought to heed the advice of former Secretary of Defense Harold Brown,<br \/>\nwho participated in an investigation of the&nbsp;Abu Ghraib&nbsp;scandal that found a failure of<br \/>\nleadership from top to bottom in the chain of command. Although&nbsp;Brown refused to call<br \/>\nfor the appropriate resignations of the top brass, as he should have, he said in <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/09\/10\/politics\/10abuse.html?hp\" target='new\"'><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399>Congressional testimony quoted Friday<\/FONT><\/B><\/A> by the New York<br \/>\nTimes that, as the Times paraphrased it,&nbsp;<I>judgments about the conduct of the war in<br \/>\nIraq, on Abu Ghraib and other matters, were up to voters to make.<\/I> (Italics added.)<\/P><br \/>\n<P>&#8220;When it comes to overall performance, there&#8217;s another way of dealing with it, and that&#8217;s<br \/>\ncalled an election,&#8221; Brown said.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Do Americans realize that by not holding the Bush gang accountable for gross violations of<br \/>\ndemocratic principles of governance they would be condoning what has happened and blackening<br \/>\ntheir own reputation? That by giving the Bush gang &#8220;four more years&#8221; they would be stamping<br \/>\ntheir approval on the historic anomaly of the 2000 election, when the U.S. Supreme Court<br \/>\nmistakenly appointed an unelected president? <\/P><br \/>\n<P>To elect the Bush gang, truly for the first time, would be tantamount to shrugging off the<br \/>\nAmerican ideals for which the terrorists of 9\/11 had such revulsion.
