PARIS — A gang of young men attacked a woman riding a suburban train
\nwith her infant child, cutting her hair and drawing swastikas on her stomach. Other passengers
\nwatched but did nothing, police reported.
\nPolice said the gang of six set upon the 23-year-old woman on a suburban train north of Paris
\nand grabbed her backpack where they found identity papers that showed an address in the capital’s
\nwell-to-do 16th district. “There are only Jews in the 16th,” one of the group of attackers

It turns out “the young woman, who was not identified, was not Jewish and no longer lived in
\nthe district,” according to the police. Ironic? Yes. But what the attack really says is
\nthat when it’s up to anti-Semites — whether neo-Nazis or Muslim extremists or, as
\nreported in this case, a gang of suburban thugs, some of whom “appeared to be of Muslim North
