That&#8217;s what police now say about the 23-year-old woman who told them a<br \/>\ngang of young men who &#8220;appeared to be of Muslim North African origin,&#8221; attacked her on a<br \/>\nsuburban train near Paris because they thought she was a Jew. She said they drew swastikas on<br \/>\nher, cut her hair and overturned a stroller with her 13-month-old child in it, while onlookers<br \/>\nwatched and did nothing, according to an <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/worldlatest\/story\/0,1280,-4299181,00.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>AP report<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> that <A\nclass=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20040701.shtml#82580\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>we quoted<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> and<br \/>\neditorialized about on Sunday.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>It&#8217;s no comfort that <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A46785-2004Jul13.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>many others<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A><br \/>\nbesides&nbsp;me fell for the hoax and condemned the reported attack as one more loathsome<br \/>\ninstance of increasing anti-Semitic violence. In France, where <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.voanews.com\/article.cfm?objectID=9A0B4F4A-A410-4A76-9720A49CD6F7\nD6A5\" target='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>hate crimes have<br \/>\nsoared<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> in recent years, everyone from President Jacques Chirac to<br \/>\nhuman rights activists expressed <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/07\/14\/international\/europe\/14fran.html?pagewanted=all\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>moral outrage<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>:<br \/>\nOne French daily, Le Figaro, compared the purported onlookers who did nothing to defend the<br \/>\nwoman on &#8220;The Train of Shame&#8221; with witnesses who watched the 1964 murder of Kitty<br \/>\nGenovese on a street in Queens, N.Y., but failed to do anything either, including calling the<br \/>\npolice.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>I don&#8217;t know what kind of apology I should make for drawing the correct conclusion from an<br \/>\nincorrect news story. The best I can do is quote regular Straight Up reader Shane Hockin, who<br \/>\nwrites with a wink that the hoax &#8220;sort of gives anti-Semites a bad name.&#8221; My staff of thousands<br \/>\nwishes I&#8217;d been clever enough to think of that.<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>She made it up.
