So said the novelist Nelson Algren, as sharp a social critic as H.L. Mencken ever was. Seems to me that the British author <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/44700.A_Robert_Lee\">A. Robert Lee<\/a> would agree with Algren. Advertising is all good news. A huge environment of surfaces.<\/em><br><strong>Marshall McLuhan<\/strong><br><br><font size=\"+2\"><em><strong>ROLL THE COMMERCIALS<\/strong><\/em><\/font><em><br>It is to be believed because it is absurd.<\/em><br><strong>Tertullian<\/strong><br><br><strong>Lee puts his point like so<em>:<\/em><\/strong><em> You might favor the view of McLuhan in <\/em>&#8220;<em>The Medium is the Message,&#8221; the panorama of idealized products so perfect that they give off solar beams.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>You might equally favor the [Edward R.]<\/em> <em>Murrow of &#8220;Good Night, and Good Luck&#8221; and the 1940s wartime and other broadcasts so crisp and un-commercialized they cut into the ear.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Either way there&#8217;s no getting round, or even off, the ever accelerating superhighway of goods, eats, services, and not least, news. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-verse\"><strong>And no escape from<\/strong> <font size=\"+2\"><strong><em><strong>U.S. PRESIDENTIAL COMMERCIALS<\/strong><\/em><\/strong><\/font><strong><strong>:<\/strong><br><br><strong>John F. Trump<\/strong> <br><\/strong><em>     Look, having nuclear \u2014 my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart \u2014 you know, if you're a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the world \u2014 it's true! . . .<\/em> <strong><br><\/strong><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Lee&#8217;s book calls to mind the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2010\/10\/unnatural.html\">another (but dirtier) social critic<\/a>, my ol&#8217; friend, the late, great collagist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/mustill-and-OU-400.jpg\">Norman O. Mustill<\/a>, whose visual take on the culture is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/Score-Page-8smallsize.jpg\">a kind of match<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p><strong>You have to go behind the billboards to understand what&#8217;s happening in America.
