But we couldn&#8217;t let this go: As tipped by <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.aldaily.com\/\" target='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>Arts &#038; Letters<br \/>\nDaily<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>, Ann Crittenden&#8217;s essay&nbsp;<A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.prospect.org\/web\/page.ww?section=root&#038;name=ViewPrint&#038;articleId=7735\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;What Do Mothers<br \/>\nWant?&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> asks the question: &#8220;Why has the U.S. never had a decent<br \/>\nsystem of child care? One feminist answer, &#8216;dumb men, stupid choices,&#8217; is long overdue.&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Far be it from us to suggest another, less catchy if more accurate summary. But we feel<br \/>\nobliged.&nbsp;Here tiz: &#8220;Mothers are struggling valiantly to find a framework or story line that<br \/>\ncoherently explains the causes of their discontent.&#8221;&nbsp; The truth is, we prefer ALD&#8217;s<br \/>\nsummary. May we illustrate with a description of <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/wa\/stories\/s1116899.htm\" target='new\"'><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;The Next Survivor Series&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A><EM>?<\/EM> It came to<br \/>\nus in email, like so:<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Six married men<BR>will be dropped<BR>on an island with<BR>one<br \/>\ncar<BR>and<BR>four kids each,<BR>for six weeks.<BR>Each kid plays two sports<BR>and<br \/>\neither takes<BR>music or dance classes.<BR>*****<BR>There is no access to fast<br \/>\nfood.<BR>*****<BR>Each man must take care of his four kids,<BR>keep his assigned house<br \/>\nclean,<BR>correct all homework,<BR>complete science projects, cook, do laundry,<br \/>\netc.<BR>*****<BR>The men only have access to television<BR>when the kids are asleep<br \/>\nand<BR>all chores are done.<BR>There is only one TV between them<BR>and there<br \/>\nis<BR>NO REMOTE.<BR>*****<BR>The men must shave their legs,<BR>wear makeup<br \/>\ndaily,<BR>which they must apply themselves,<BR>either while driving or<BR>while making<br \/>\nfour lunches.<BR>*****<BR>They must attend weekly PTA meetings;<BR>clean up after their<br \/>\nsick children at 3:00 a.m.;<BR>make an Indian hut model<BR>with six toothpicks,<BR>a<br \/>\ntortilla<BR>and one marker;<BR>and get a 4-year-old to eat a serving of<br \/>\npeas.<BR>*****<BR>The kids vote them off the island, based on<br \/>\nperformance.<BR>*****<BR>The last man wins &#8230;<BR>only if &#8230;<BR>he has enough energy to<br \/>\nbe intimate<BR>with his spouse at a moment&#8217;s notice.<BR>*****<BR>If the last man does win,<br \/>\nhe can play the game<BR>over and over again<BR>for the next 18-25 years &#8230;<BR>eventually<br \/>\nearning the right to be called<BR>*****<BR>&#8220;Mother.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>And yes, we&#8217;re aware &#8220;The Next Survivor Series&#8221; has been making its way around the Web<br \/>\nfor some time in <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.upsoclose.com\/blog\/index.php?p=1875&#038;c=1\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>different<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> <A\nclass=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/bbs.babycenter.com\/board\/baby\/postpartumsex\/1252548\/thread\/1029761\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#cc3366>versions<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>.
