{"id":710,"date":"2004-05-14T09:24:14","date_gmt":"2004-05-14T16:24:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2004\/05\/the_land_of_is\/"},"modified":"2004-05-14T09:24:14","modified_gmt":"2004-05-14T16:24:14","slug":"the_land_of_is","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2004\/05\/the_land_of_is.html","title":{"rendered":"THE LAND OF IS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Like Dorothy on the Yellow Brick Road, we&#8217;re off to see the wizards of <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.newdemocracyproject.com\/events\/special_events\/wwsf_schedule.cfm\"\ntarget='new\"'><B>&#8220;<EM><FONT color=#003399>What<\/FONT><\/EM> <EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>We Stand For,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> a two-day conference featuring Paul<br \/>\nKrugman, Gary Hart, Jim Fallows, Sandy Berger, Eliot Spitzer, Barbara Ehrenreich, Kevin<br \/>\nPhillips, Robert Reich, Joe Trippi and many more from the Land of Is. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>In our absence, here are some excerpts from a memo by one of our fave columnists, <A\nclass=inline href=\"http:\/\/www.observer.com\/pages\/newyorkdiary.asp\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>Bruce<br \/>\nFeirstein<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>,&nbsp;channeling Karl Rove&#8217;s updates of new &#8220;White<br \/>\nHouse-approved media buzzwords&#8221;:<\/P><br \/>\n<P>+ <I>Abu Grhaib prison.<\/I> Henceforth, this will be known as the &#8220;Khalil Gibran\/Dale<br \/>\nEarnhardt Jr. vocational-training facility and recreational center.&#8221; As John Kerry himself asked:<br \/>\n&#8220;Who among us does not like NASCAR?&#8221;<BR>+ <I>&#8220;Liberators.&#8221;<\/I> This remains the<br \/>\npreferred terminology to describe our presence in Iraq, as opposed to &#8220;bungling clueless<br \/>\nsuperpower.&#8221;<BR>+ <I>&#8220;American war criminals.&#8221;<\/I> Please substitute &#8220;Overzealous<br \/>\npatriots.&#8221;<BR>+ <I>&#8220;Independent contractors&#8221;<\/I> remains our preferred appellation.<br \/>\n&#8220;Mercenaries,&#8221; &#8220;hired guns,&#8221; &#8220;Halliburton employees&#8221; or &#8220;crazed good ol&#8217; boys operating outside<br \/>\nany known moral or legal authority&#8221; are not acceptable synonyms.<BR>+ <I>&#8220;Prisoners of<br \/>\nwar.&#8221;<\/I> Better to say &#8220;Guests of interest.&#8221;<BR>+ <I>&#8220;War Crimes,&#8221; &#8220;Atrocities,&#8221;<br \/>\n&#8220;Human-rights violations,&#8221; &#8220;Torture,&#8221; &#8220;Softening up prisoners for interrogation.&#8221;<\/I> The<br \/>\npreferred description is &#8220;intelligence-gathering activities.&#8221; But if pressed, use &#8220;Having a frank and<br \/>\nhonest chat with our &#8216;guests of interest.'&#8221;<BR>+ <I>&#8220;A world of hurt.&#8221;<\/I> Avoid. Please<br \/>\nsubstitute &#8220;An unfortunate and unforseeable blip on the road to success.&#8221;<BR>+ <I>&#8220;Chain of<br \/>\ncommand.&#8221;<\/I> Obsolete.<BR>+ <I>&#8220;Swatting flies.&#8221;<\/I> Inoperative.<BR>+ <I>&#8220;Imminent<br \/>\nthreat.&#8221;<\/I> Banished.<BR>+ <I>&#8220;Boots on the ground.&#8221;<\/I> Expunged. (Alas, it seems that<br \/>\ncertain &#8220;independent contractors&#8221; mistook this to mean &#8220;boots on the prisoner&#8217;s head.&#8221;)<BR>+<br \/>\n<I>Presidential daily briefing.<\/I> The P.D.B. will henceforth be known as &#8220;USA Today.&#8221; If you<br \/>\nget a chance, stop by to say hello to ace journalist Jack Kelley, who&#8217;s been brought in to edit<br \/>\nit.<BR>+ <I>&#8220;Unknown unknowns.&#8221;<\/I> Now that we know what said &#8220;unknown unknowns&#8221; are<br \/>\n(i.e., white trash gone wild in Abu Ghraib prison), this phrase will be dropped from our<br \/>\nlexicon.<BR>+ <I>&#8220;It&#8217;s possible.&#8221;<\/I> As per use by Donald Rumsfeld: &#8220;Not a chance.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Future updates are pending, we hope. This morning even strait-laced&nbsp;William Powers<br \/>\noffers a faux <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/custom\/showcase\/la-oe-powers14may14.story\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>news summary<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>,<br \/>\nRummy-style.
