Tim Rutten, the Los<br \/>\nAngeles Times media columnist, writing a week before her piece appeared in The New York<br \/>\nTimes Magazine on Sunday, <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/news\/custom\/showcase\/cl-et-rutten15may15.column\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>told us<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>:<\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>The mainstream media&#8217;s insistence on primly referring to what occurred in<br \/>\nwhat was once Saddam Hussein&#8217;s most infamous prison as &#8220;abuse&#8221; is part and parcel of their deep<br \/>\navoidance of this story&#8217;s implications. Abuse is what happens when you fail to feed your parakeet<br \/>\nor speak intemperately to a sensitive child. When you starve or drown or beat or sexually<br \/>\nhumiliate another human being, it is called torture. It&#8217;s what occurred in Hitler&#8217;s concentration<br \/>\ncamps, Stalin&#8217;s Gulag, Pol Pot&#8217;s Cambodia, Pinochet&#8217;s Chile, Hussein&#8217;s Iraq and &#8212; now &#8212; in the<br \/>\nsecret prison system the United States has constructed in defiance of its international obligations<br \/>\nand our own laws and traditions.<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P>That about covers that subject. But writers keep nibbling at the why&#8217;s and wherefore&#8217;s. Today<br \/>\nEliot A. Cohen does it in The Washington Post with a piece about <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/articles\/A53221-2004May24.html\"\ntarget='new\"'><STRONG><EM><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Our Soldiers and<br \/>\nUs.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/STRONG>&nbsp;<\/A>He tells us:<\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>If a society has no norm of chief executives accepting responsibility for their<br \/>\ncorporations&#8217; moral and financial failures, do not expect generals to line up to say: &#8220;It happened<br \/>\non my watch, and I therefore offer the secretary of defense my resignation.&#8221; In some measure,<br \/>\nsocieties get the militaries they deserve.<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P>To which we say: &#8220;Yes sir!&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>To the presidential speech last night at the U.S. War College, all we can say is: &#8220;Huh?&#8221;<br \/>\nWilliam Saletin refers to it as The Little Fucker&#8217;s <A class=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/slate.msn.com\/id\/2101011\/\" target='new\"'><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;Magical History Tour,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> an airbrushed version of<br \/>\nreality: &#8220;Is Bush embarrassed that a year of occupation has failed to substantiate his claims about<br \/>\nIraqi weapons of mass destruction and links to global terrorism?
