WEB SITE VERSIONS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Jack Shafer&#8217;s piece, <A class=inline href=\"http:\/\/slate.msn.com\/id\/2100012\/\"\ntarget='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Honey, They Shrunk the<br \/>\nNewspaper,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> is generally right about a lot of things wrong with the<br \/>\nelectronic editions (vs. the standard Web site versions) of The Washington Post, the Los Angeles<br \/>\nTimes and The New York Times &#8212; and what&#8217;s right about them. (Here in miniature is what an <A\nclass=inline\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.newsstand.com\/index.cfm?fuseaction=subscriptions&#038;zone_ID=1&#038;pub_ID=5&#038;\nedition_ID=6&#038;issue_id=49196&#038;pub_type=1&#038;privacy_flag=Y&#038;pub_name=The%20New%20Yor\nk%20Times\" target='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>electronic<br \/>\nedition<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> looks like.) He&#8217;s exactly right when he says: <\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>E-editions preserve the information-rich typography of print by displaying<br \/>\nreplicas of the newsprint page. An e-edition reader has a leg up on the reader of the HTML<br \/>\nversion of the paper because the original typefaces and placement retained in PDF give the<br \/>\ne-edition reader clues about the intended rank and &#8220;play&#8221; of a news story (in the editors&#8217; opinion).<br \/>\nWeb sites suffer on this score because most stories are presented in long lists of plain<br \/>\ntext.<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P>But the standard, broadband Web site versions we&#8217;ve become accustomed to also have their<br \/>\nadvantages. For instance, <A class=inlinelink\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.newsday.com\/news\/nationworld\/world\/ny-rwanda-flash,0,4940953.flash?coll=n\ny-homepage-big-pix\" target='new\"'><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>Rwanda: 10 years of<br \/>\npain<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>, from Newsday, is a broadband Web report not to be missed.<br \/>\nYou can&#8217;t find it in Newsday&#8217;s print edition, and you wouldn&#8217;t find it in an electronic edition (even<br \/>\nif Newsday had one).<\/P><br \/>\n<P>An easy prediction: The day can&#8217;t be far off when Web-based designers will meld electronic<br \/>\neditions and broadband Web site versions in user-friendly packages to give us the best&nbsp; and<br \/>\nworst of both worlds.<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jack Shafer&#8217;s piece, &#8220;Honey, They Shrunk the Newspaper,&#8221; is generally right about a lot of things wrong with the electronic editions (vs. the standard Web site versions) of The Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times and The New York Times &#8212; and what&#8217;s right about them.
