WAFFLES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Always good to see the editorial page of The New York Times ratifying our <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20040401.shtml#76343\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>snap judgments<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>. The editorial board must be genteel,<br \/>\nof course. It cannot be as blunt as we were about Colin Powell, but its considered opinion this<br \/>\nmorning is pretty much the same. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>This is what we said yesterday:<\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>So he warned our dopey Maximum Leader about owning Iraq. Let&#8217;s not make<br \/>\nthe U.S. Secretary of State a hero. Isn&#8217;t he the man of principle who went to the U.N. with<br \/>\nso-called proof of WMD in Iraq, which he in fact doubted? Didn&#8217;t his <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/news\/releases\/2003\/02\/20030205-1.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>diplomatic charade<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> come a month after he knew the<br \/>\ndecision to go to war for all intents and purposes had already been taken?<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P>This is what the Times Web site said in its <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/pages\/opinion\/index.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>summary<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> of today&#8217;s <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/04\/20\/opinion\/20TUE1.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>lead editorial<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>: &#8220;If Secretary of State Colin Powell<br \/>\nthought the invasion of Iraq was a bad idea, his inaction is puzzling and disappointing.&#8221; Such<br \/>\npuzzlement. Such disappointment. Can&#8217;t you see the&nbsp;sorrowful looks in their faces as the<br \/>\nladies&nbsp;and gentlemen of the editorial board gather for&nbsp;their meeting in the clubby<br \/>\natmosphere of the Times building&#8217;s 10th floor? <\/P><br \/>\n<P>The editorial itself is headlined &#8220;Which Powell Is Which?&#8221; There&#8217;s no gainsaying that. It<br \/>\nnotes:<\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>What we seem to have once again with Mr. Powell is a desire to have it both<br \/>\nways, to be seen as a loyal member of the Bush team, but also as a wise man who knew all along<br \/>\nthat the Iraq war would be a mistake. If the Woodward version is correct, Mr. Powell should have<br \/>\nspoken up more than a year ago.<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P>We also said of Mr. Waffles: <\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>Not to put too fine a point on it, is he not the guy who went along with &#8220;the<br \/>\nGestapo,&#8221; his own term for &#8220;the civilian conservatives in the Pentagon loyal to [Dick] Cheney,&#8221;<br \/>\naccording to Bob Woodward&#8217;s &#8220;Plan of Attack&#8221;?<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P>Now, according to <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2004\/ALLPOLITICS\/04\/20\/woodward.book\/index.html\"><B><EM><br \/>\n<FONT color=#003399>CNN this morning<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> and others, and as the<br \/>\nTimes <A href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/04\/20\/politics\/20SPEN.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>reports separately<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> from its editorial, Powell has<br \/>\n&#8220;disputed Mr. Woodward&#8217;s account in several respects.&#8221; He said &#8220;he had an excellent relationship<br \/>\nwith Vice President Dick Cheney and that he did not recall referring to officals at the Pentagon<br \/>\nloyal to Mr. Cheney as the &#8216;Gestapo office.'&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Notice that he didn&#8217;t deny the reference; he simply didn&#8217;t remember saying it.
