The runaway slave came to my house and <\/strong>
   stopt outside,

Whitman is idolized as much as he is loved. Karl Shapiro takes Whitman down a peg \u2014 well, half a peg \u2014 in this poem, which appears in his 1992 collection, The Old Horsefly<\/em>:
