When I was a salaried reporter, I did pretty well over the course of more than two decades at three major metro dailies in Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles. It always helped to get freelance work, however. During the mid-1980s I wrote a handful of stories for three German publications, the girlie magazine LUI<\/em>, the Berlin city magazine TIP,<\/em> and the sleek and serious cultural magazine TransAtlantik,<\/em> all of which paid better than the American magazines I had access to. Those freelance pieces appeared only in German translation. Four in My GRUB STREET<\/a><\/em> \u2014 “Bad Boy,” “Brothel,” “Scams,” and “Underworld” \u2014 never appeared in print in the original English. Which is why I\u2019m having them published now. I haven\u2019t updated them. The subjects seemed to me to need no updating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
