Farrell notwithstanding. Algren&#8217;s notorious love-hate relationship with Chicago went beyond the city&#8217;s limits   with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0374525323\/qid=1078842294\/sr=1-2\/ref= sr_1_2\/104-6076782-4410319?v=glance&#038;s=books\"><em>A Walk on the Wild Side<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Devils-Stocking-Nelson-Algren\/dp\/B007HWNMEA\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&#038;ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1359837532&#038;sr=1-1&#038;keywords=the+devil%27s+stocking\"><em>The Devil&#8217;s Stocking,<\/em><\/a> but filled his best-known novel <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/1583220089\/qid=1078842227\/sr=1-1\/ref= sr_1_1\/104-6076782-4410319?v=glance&#038;s=books\"><em>The Man With the Golden Arm<\/em><\/a> and his least-known <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Never-Come-Morning-Nelson-Algren\/dp\/1583222790\/ref=tmm_pap_title_0?ie=UTF8&#038;qid=1078842330&#038;sr=1-2\"><em>Never Come Morning,<\/em><\/a> and his long-limbed poetry.<\/p>\n<p>Below are a few excerpts from a 28-page poem, entitled &#8220;Ode to Kissassville,&#8221; which to my knowledge has never been properly published.  Filled as it is with sardonic humor, lyrical grace, and an outrage that is more timely than ever, &#8220;Ode to Kissassville&#8221; would make a wonderful chapbook. It was written more than 40 years ago and centers on Chicago but surely applies to the current state of our Banana Republic.<\/p>\n<p>The poem once appeared as an epilogue in 100 copies of a 1961 reprint edition of his prose poem <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0226013855\/qid=1078513145\/sr=1-1\/ref= sr_1_1\/002-0403379-8879245?v=glance&#038;s=books\"><em>Chicago: City on the Make<\/em><\/a>. begins:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hog-Butcher, Stacker-of-Wheat, Freight-Handler, Piano-Mover,<br \/>\nTall bold slugger set vivid among the little soft cities and<br \/>\nAll-Around-Rotating-Fink-To-The-Nation<br \/>\nWhere else (Contentedly at rest before the evening telly)<br \/>\nCould I watch PROFILE OF A SECRET WAR:<br \/>\nTASK FORCE TUFF KEEPING CHICAGO STRONG AND AMERICA MIGHTY<br \/>\n(WGN-TV assisting the forces of law and order<br \/>\nBy entrapping two derelicts into a feeble attempt at mugging)<br \/>\nWhat other city could show me eight armed cops<br \/>\nBeating the living bejesus out of two defenseless winos<br \/>\nIn Living Color?<\/p>\n<p>Show me another city so proud to be alive<br \/>\nThat it can fit two citizen-dress men into false bra&#8217;s<br \/>\nAnd tight gowns<br \/>\nThen send them down Skid Row bravely swinging handbags<br \/>\nAnd hips rolling.<br \/>\nWhat New York&#8217;s police would like to do, Chicago&#8217;s really can<br \/>\nIn that contented evening hour when we learn to Trap Our Man.<\/p>\n<p><em>It has stanzas such as this:<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The perch &#8212; the alderman reminds us well &#8212;<br \/>\nHave disappeared.<br \/>\nThe underwater population now consists<br \/>\nOf bloodworms, sludgeworms<br \/>\nAnd fingernail clams.<br \/>\nYet once, where Marina Towers&#8217; twin-atrocities now stand<br \/>\nThe Pottawattomies hunted down both banks<br \/>\nAnd the river flowed cleaner and more deeply then.<\/p>\n<p><EM>And this:<\/EM><\/p>\n<p>Under the terrible burden of destiny<br \/>\nLaughing even as an ignorant fighter laughs<br \/>\nWho has never lost a battle<br \/>\nBragging and laughing that under his wrist is the pulse<br \/>\nAnd under his ribs the heart of the people &#8212;<br \/>\nHurray for our side.<br \/>\nIf my City of the Big Shoulders<br \/>\nStormy, husky, bawling<br \/>\nYipping, yapping, yessing, crawling<br \/>\nWould only stop giggling like a farm-boy wearing earrings<br \/>\nOn North Wells Street for the first time<br \/>\nMaybe we could find out what kind of joint we&#8217;re living in.<\/p>\n<p><EM>And this:<\/EM><\/p>\n<p>Again that hour when taxies are deadheading home<br \/>\nBefore the trolley-buses start to run<br \/>\nAnd snowdreams in a lace of mist drift down<br \/>\nAnd paving-flares make shadows on old walls<br \/>\nWhen from asylum, barrack, cell and cheap hotel<br \/>\nAll those whose lives were lived by someone else<br \/>\nWho never had a choice but went on what was left<br \/>\nReturn along long walks where thrusts of wintry grass<br \/>\nBy force of love have split the measured stone.<\/p>\n<p><EM>If by chance a publisher reads this and is prompted, inspired or brave and crazy enough to bring out a &#8220;Kissassville&#8221;
