{"id":576,"date":"2004-03-18T10:46:51","date_gmt":"2004-03-18T18:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2004\/03\/assault_on_the_system\/"},"modified":"2004-03-18T10:46:51","modified_gmt":"2004-03-18T18:46:51","slug":"assault_on_the_system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2004\/03\/assault_on_the_system.html","title":{"rendered":"ASSAULT ON THE SYSTEM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Paul Gigot,&nbsp;editor of The&nbsp;Wall Street Journal&#8217;s&nbsp;deeply, archly<br \/>\nconservative&nbsp;editorial page &#8212; he&#8217;s known in the trade as Paul Giggly, or in some quarters as<br \/>\nPaulie Giggles aka Paul Gidget &#8212; is probably&nbsp;gnashing&nbsp;his teeth over&nbsp;a<br \/>\nreporting staff that&nbsp;keeps&nbsp;turning out uncomfortable&nbsp;stories that run counter<br \/>\nto&nbsp;the editorials.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>In a stunner <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article_email\/0,,SB107957118484958706-IVjeoNnlah3n5yva32HcKy\nEm5,00.html\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>reported this morning by&nbsp;the<br \/>\nJournal<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>, the five U.S. military lawyers designated to represent the<br \/>\nGuantanamo detainees in the first U.S. military tribunals since World War II &#8220;have launched a<br \/>\nsurprisingly vigorous assault on the system that hired them.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Allying themselves with human-rights groups, the five members of the Advocate General&#8217;s<br \/>\nCorps &#8212; JAGs as the military lawyers are called &#8212; &#8220;have attacked the tribunals [authorized by the<br \/>\nBush administration] as inherently unfair, contrary to international law and susceptible to political<br \/>\ninfluence,&#8221; Jess Bravin reports in a front-page article.<\/P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>Ultimately, the JAGs are expected to challenge virtually every aspect of the<br \/>\nadministration&#8217;s policies on Guantanamo detainees, from the denial of protections of the Geneva<br \/>\nConventions to the interrogation methods used in extracting statements.
