He&#8217;s not the first to argue that Ralph Nader<br \/>\nshouldn&#8217;t run for president &#8212; it&#8217;s hard to be first in a weekly magazine &#8212; but he marshals his<br \/>\nreasons, while still heaping praise on Nader, with a cogency I haven&#8217;t read elsewhere. &#8230; Leave it<br \/>\nto CNN&#8217;s Larry King to heap praise on Bob Dole, while choosing exactly the wrong word with<br \/>\ntypical incoherence. As a political pundit, Dole is &#8220;an <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/03\/02\/politics\/campaign\/02DOLE.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>incredible source<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>,&#8221; King says. &#8230; Thank God, or<br \/>\nSomeone, that <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/03\/02\/opinion\/02KRUG.html?hp\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>Paul Krugman is back<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> from vacation. Without him<br \/>\nthe Op-ed page of The New York Times goes as limp as a banana peel. &#8230; This is especially true<br \/>\nwhen <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/03\/02\/opinion\/02BROO.html?hp\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>David Brooks claims<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> that the poor are to blame for<br \/>\ntheir&nbsp;poverty: All they have to do to live happily ever after is&nbsp;look in the mirror and<br \/>\nreform their &#8220;bad behavior.&#8221;<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s good to see The New Yorker&#8217;s&nbsp;Hendrik Hertzberg back in top form.
