We learned about Niles from a friend&#8217;s smart tip.<br \/>\nHe pointed to this&nbsp;<A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.laobserved.com\/archive\/001399.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>item at LA Observed<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>, which in turn pointed to <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.violinist.com\/blog\/laurie\/\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>Laurie Niles&#8217;s<br \/>\nViolin Blog<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>&#8220;Apparently the <A href=\"http:\/\/www.laphil.com\/home.cfm\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>Big Orchestra in Town<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> got more than 500 resumes<br \/>\nfor their one section violin position,&#8221; she writes, &#8220;and after carefully reviewing mine decided not<br \/>\nto &#8216;invite&#8217; me to the audition. Waah! They even returned my $100 deposit fee!&#8221; Read about her<br \/>\nextraordinary commitment to getting that audition, no matter what. The odds are actually greater<br \/>\nthan 500 to 1, but LA Observed says, &#8220;Don&#8217;t bet against her.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>Postscript:<\/STRONG> It should be mentioned that the problem of a woman<br \/>\nbeing&nbsp;picked for the LA Phil&nbsp;doesn&#8217;t have much to do with gender these days, in<br \/>\ncontrast to the Vienna Phil. This is particularly true for violinists. There are nine women<br \/>\nand&nbsp;nine men in the first-violin section, for example, and at least four women&nbsp;among<br \/>\nthe 15 second violinists.
