{"id":552,"date":"2004-02-29T11:19:11","date_gmt":"2004-02-29T19:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2004\/02\/emblematic\/"},"modified":"2004-02-29T11:19:11","modified_gmt":"2004-02-29T19:19:11","slug":"emblematic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2004\/02\/emblematic.html","title":{"rendered":"EMBLEMATIC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Apropos last Tuesday&#8217;s item, <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20040222.shtml#71039\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>Blood Money,<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> which claimed that Mel Gibson&#8217;s<br \/>\n&#8220;Passion&#8221; and the call for a Constitution amendment banning gay marriage signaled &#8220;a perverse<br \/>\ncultural moment,&#8221; a reader from Florida writes: &#8220;I just don&#8217;t see the connection between Gibson<br \/>\nand anti-gay marriage movement, aside of the fact they fall under the &#8216;things Jan Herman doesn&#8217;t<br \/>\nlike&#8217; category.&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Well, have a look this morning&#8217;s article <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/02\/29\/weekinreview\/29tone.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>The Culture Wars, Part II,<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> and I quote: &#8220;[C]ulture<br \/>\nwars wax and wane. And in recent days, as the nation furiously debated gay marriage, Mel<br \/>\nGibson&#8217;s movie, &#8216;The Passion of the Christ&#8217; and Janet Jackson&#8217;s raunchy half-time show at the<br \/>\nSuper Bowl, the culture war seemed to be waxing again.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>So yes, the Gibson thing and the anti-gay thing are &#8220;things Jan Herman doesn&#8217;t like.&#8221; But<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s not the only reason I linked them. I suppose I should have linked the Janet Jackson boobie<br \/>\nshow, too.
