Edgar Hoover and the Bureau\u2019s Crusade Against Smut<\/em>, in which Hinds begins with a poem by Catullus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The comparison between the &#8220;obscene&#8221; Bukowski and the &#8220;obscene&#8221; Catullus is too good to pass up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coffeeconnectionpoets.com\/poems\/charlesbukowski\/viewpost\/2105_THE_BEST_POEM_LOVE_I_CAN_WRITE_AT_THE_MOMENT.html\">The Best Love Poem I Can Write at the Moment<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>listen, I told her,<br>why don&#8217;t you stick your tongue<br>up my<br>ass?<br>no, she said.<br>well, I said, if I stick my tongue<br>up your ass first<br>then will you stick your tongue<br>up my<br>ass?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>all right, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I got my head down there<br>and looked around,<br>opened a section,<br>then moved my tongue forward&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>not there, she said,<br>o, hahaha, not there, that&#8217;s not<br>the right place!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you women have more holes than<br>swiss cheese&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t want you<br>to do<br>it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>well, then I&#8217;ll have to do it<br>back and then at the next party<br>you&#8217;ll tell people I licked your ass<br>with my tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>suppose I promise not to<br>tell?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>you&#8217;ll get drunk, you&#8217;ll<br>tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>o.k., I said, roll over,<br>I&#8217;ll stick it in the<br>other place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>she rolled over and I stuck my tongue<br>in that other place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>we were in love<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>we were in love<br>except with what I said at<br>parties<br>and we were not in love<br>with each other&#8217;s<br>assholes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>she wants me to write a love poem<br>but I think if people<br>can&#8217;t love each other&#8217;s<br>assholes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and farts and shits and terrible parts<br>just like they love<br>the good parts,<br>that ain&#8217;t complete love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>so as far as love poems go<br>as far as we have gone,<br>this poem will have to<br>do<br><strong><br><em>&#8212; Charles Bukowski<\/em><\/strong><br>published in <em>Madrona, No. 2<\/em> [1971]<br>Listen to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=apgc_wMQ4uM\">Buk reading the poem<\/a> at City Lights Poets Theater, San Francisco [1973].<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And here&#8217;s Catullus two millenia ago, in a translation I prefer to Hinds&#8217;s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span style=\"font-size: large;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/community.middlebury.edu\/~harris\/catullus.97.98.html\">Catullus 97<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So help me god, I can&#8217;t tell the difference<br>whether I sniff at Aemilius&#8217; mouth or at his ass.<br>The one is not cleaner and the other not dirtier.<br>Actually the asshole may be cleaner and nicer in the end,<br>at least it has no teeth, the mouth has long fang ones,<br>with the gums of an old manure-loaded shit wagon,<br>and a foul odor which the pissing cunt<br>of a mule in heat is often likely to have.<br>Well, he fancies himself a beauty, fucks many a lady<br>yet is not sent to the mill-jail as a working ass.<br>If any girl touches him, wouldn&#8217;t we think her ready<br>to lick the ass of a sick torture-chamber executioner ?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>&#8212; translated by William Harris<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyone out there have suggestions for other comparative obscenities?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The other day a friend of mine said, &#8220;I&#8217;m not sure a living human has written a good poem since Bukowski died.&#8221; His all-time Buk favorite is &#8220;The Best Love Poem I Can Write at the Moment.&#8221; Coincidentally, I came across a review by Michael Hinds of The FBI\u2019s Obscene File: J.
