“Early Death and Fame” was first published in Fraser’s Magazine, in May 1855, and went through several changes until, in 1867, it found its final form. The changes were small. Were they fussy? I think not.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

EARLY DEATH AND FAME<\/strong>   \n\nFor him who must see many years,                                    \nI praise the life which slips away.         \nOut of the light and mutely; which avoids \nFame, and her less fair followers, envy, strife, \nStupid detraction, jealousy, cabal, \nInsincere praises; which descends \nThe quiet mossy track to age. \n\nBut, when immature death\nBeckons too early the guest \nFrom the half-tried banquet of life, \nYoung in the bloom of his days; \nLeaves no leisure to press, \nSlow and surely, the sweets  \nOf a tranquil life in the shade \u2014\nFuller for him be the hours! \nGive him emotion, though pain! \nLet him live, let him feel: I have lived.<\/em> \nHeap up his moments with life! \nTriple his pulses with fame! \n\n\nWords that were changed in<\/strong> bold<\/strong>:<\/em>\n___________________________________________________\nFor him who must live<\/strong> many years,           (first line) <\/em>\nThat life is best<\/strong> which slips away.
