Bush delivered on Sunday <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.stltoday.com\/stltoday\/news\/stories.nsf\/News\/Nation\/4893D0C820B9C2078625\n6E35002321A7OpenDocument&#038;Headline=On+talk+show,+Bush+defends+policies,+sets+agenda\n\"><B>a robust defense of his presidency<\/B><\/A>, from his policy toward Iraq to his handling of<br \/>\nthe economy to his blunt style &#8230;&#8221; <BR><BR>But now that the media has had a chance to digest<br \/>\nits so-called news, things are looking somewhat better. In two beautiful editorials, yesterday&#8217;s <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/02\/09\/opinion\/09MON1.html?ex=1076907600&#038;en=fb27e5a\n6c53b9ced&#038;ei=5062&#038;partner=GOOGLE\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Mr. Bush&#8217;s<br \/>\nVersion&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> and today&#8217;s <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/02\/10\/opinion\/10TUE1.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;Mr. Bush&#8217;s Revisionism,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> The New York Times has<br \/>\nspoken out with ringing clarity against the pin-headed deceptions and pathetic lies that passed in<br \/>\ncertain quarters&nbsp;for &#8220;a robust defense.&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Many others, too, are weighing in. For example, Chicago Sun-Times columnist Mary A.<br \/>\nMitchell says this morning she feels betrayed: <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.suntimes.com\/output\/mitchell\/cst-nws-mitch10.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;Trust fades as war cry rings too hollow.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> Fred<br \/>\nKaplan wonders in Slate, in <A href=\"http:\/\/slate.msn.com\/id\/2095184\/\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;Bush at Sea&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>: &#8220;Does this war president have any<br \/>\nidea what he&#8217;s talking about?&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>That is not a rhetorical question.<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The news media&#8217;s pretense that the Maximum Leader actually said something of value Sunday in his interview on &#8220;Meet the Press&#8221; was one more confirmation that the United States is being turned into a Banana Republic.
