{"id":515,"date":"2004-02-04T10:16:41","date_gmt":"2004-02-04T18:16:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2004\/02\/barebreasted_fame\/"},"modified":"2004-02-04T10:16:41","modified_gmt":"2004-02-04T18:16:41","slug":"barebreasted_fame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2004\/02\/barebreasted_fame.html","title":{"rendered":"BARE-BREASTED FAME"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>My <A href=\"http:\/\/www.middlemiss.org\/lit\/authors\/jamesc\/jamesc.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>favorite Australian-born TV critic<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> once wrote: &#8220;What<br \/>\nthe junk journalist doesn&#8217;t realise &#8212; or does realise, and waxes more aggressive so as to shout<br \/>\ndown his vestigial conscience &#8212; is that he&#8217;s not really a party to the star&#8217;s fame, which is based on<br \/>\nsolid appreciation and would still be there even if the tabloid press disappeared overnight.&#8221; But<br \/>\nthat was in 1981, and he was writing about his admiration for Billie Jean King, who was being<br \/>\nouted as a lesbian.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Nevertheless, is what that critic said still true? (Hell, was it true then?) Is there a junk<br \/>\njournalist alive today who even has a vestigial conscience? Is there still such a thing as solid<br \/>\nappreciation as opposed to, say, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.janet-xone.com\/\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>leering fandom<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>? For that matter, is there a star alive<br \/>\nwho hasn&#8217;t been marketed, not to say manufactured, by the the most powerful instrument of the<br \/>\ntabloid press: television? <\/P><br \/>\n<P>One way of looking at all those questions is to point out that&nbsp;Janet Jackson&#8217;s new<br \/>\nsingle, <A href=\"http:\/\/www.bet.com\/articles\/0,,c2gb8667-9521,00.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;Just a Little While,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> has been <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.azcentral.com\/arizonarepublic\/arizonaliving\/articles\/0204people0204.html\"><B\n><EM><FONT color=#003399>rushed to radio stations<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>, to make the<br \/>\nmost of the fuss about her bared breast. Another is to note that the Federal Communications<br \/>\nCommission chief, an indignant&nbsp;Michael Powell, has been&nbsp;<A\nhref=\"http:\/\/hraunfoss.fcc.gov\/edocs_public\/attachmatch\/DOC-243435A1.pdf\"><B><EM><FON\nT color=#003399>beating his breast in outrage<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> about her bared<br \/>\nbreast.
