I don&#8217;t think so. Is it the<br \/>\nfuture of sports entertainment in this country? I hope not. Nonetheless, I pass along a friend&#8217;s<br \/>\nrecommendation of Barry Blaustein&#8217;s documentary, <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/B00004U8H3\/qid=1071672701\/sr=1-1\/ref\n=sr_1_1\/002-7533589-7791239?v=glance&#038;s=dvd\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Beyond<br \/>\nthe Mat,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> for what he calls &#8220;its excellent, objective view of the world<br \/>\nof pro wrestling.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Why, you might reasonably ask, does&nbsp;my friend&nbsp;even care about professional<br \/>\nwrestling? Because it is the entertainment of choice for a very large segment of the U.S.<br \/>\npopulation, and we should understand what our neighbors watch and why. Besides, many people<br \/>\nhave said that the best times to go to a Wal-Mart is during the telecast of&nbsp;a pro wrestling<br \/>\nmatch or a NASCAR event.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Which brings us to another question: Can we categorize people who shop at Wal-Mart as<br \/>\nsubversive shoppers? <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20031102.shtml#58865\"><B><FONT\ncolor=#003399><EM>Wal-Mart has been shown to<br \/>\nharm<\/EM><\/FONT><\/B><\/A>&nbsp;rather than help local economies in a variety of<br \/>\nways,&nbsp;like displacing local merchants and&nbsp;refusing to use local vendors (besides<br \/>\npaying sub-standard wages and benefits). <\/P><br \/>\n<P>So yes, you might reasonably conclude, consumers who shop at Wal-Mart undermine their<br \/>\nlocal economies: Instead of shopping for the greater good, they just shop to save eight cents on a<br \/>\nroll of toilet paper.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>POSTSCRIPT:<\/STRONG> Marc Weisblott, <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/weisblogg.pitas.com\/\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>pop-culture blogger<br \/>\nextraordinaire<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>, recently wrote: &#8220;I&#8217;m not anti-Wal-Mart out of any sort<br \/>\nof principle, but I can&#8217;t say I&#8217;ve experienced any satisfaction after shopping there. Case in point:<br \/>\nFruit of the Loom boxer briefs, two pair for six bucks. In fact, I picked up two such packages, but<br \/>\nforfeited one at the register because it wasn&#8217;t the discount kind. The reason why became apparent<br \/>\nonce home&#8211;they are the &#8220;two pouch&#8221; variety, featuring a fly that boasts of being &#8220;easy to use&#8221; on<br \/>\nthe basis that it&#8217;s <I>horizontal<\/I>.
