So here&#8217;s today&#8217;s, from the swiftly rising<br \/>\npurplemeister <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/12\/16\/opinion\/16BROO.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>David Brooks<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>. He writes this morning that &#8220;Bush<br \/>\nbelieves the U.S. has a unique role to play in [the] struggle to complete democracy&#8217;s triumph over<br \/>\ntyranny and so drain the swamp of terror.&#8221; When the &#8220;triumph over tyranny&#8221; does &#8220;drain the<br \/>\nswamp of terror,&#8221; maybe it will also do a clean-up job on the purplemeister&#8217;s prose.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><B>POSTSCRIPT:<\/B> Martin Bernheimer has issued a purple opera alert in his review<br \/>\ntoday of <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/news.ft.com\/servlet\/ContentServer?pagename=FT.com\/StoryFT\/FullStory&#038;c=StoryF\nT&#038;cid=1071251572838&#038;p=1016625900929\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Benvenuto<br \/>\nCellini&#8221; at the Met<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>. He writes that &#8220;the conductor James Levine<br \/>\ntended to stress the ponderous. Meanwhile, the director Andrei Serban tended to err on the side<br \/>\nof whimsy.&#8221; The whimsy&nbsp;featured a constellation of&nbsp;&#8220;fugitives from a commedia<br \/>\ndell&#8217;arte circus, a corps of angels and archangels plus looming figures of the inquisition.
