{"id":491,"date":"2004-01-04T01:04:35","date_gmt":"2004-01-04T09:04:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2004\/01\/lining_up_for_chucho\/"},"modified":"2004-01-04T01:04:35","modified_gmt":"2004-01-04T09:04:35","slug":"lining_up_for_chucho","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2004\/01\/lining_up_for_chucho.html","title":{"rendered":"LINING UP FOR CHUCHO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Jazz critic Ben Ratliff made my day on New Year&#8217;s with a <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/01\/01\/arts\/music\/01VALD.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>gorgeous, appreciative review<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> of Chucho Valdes and<br \/>\nhis New York-based quartet at Manhattan&#8217;s Village Vanguard.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>&#8220;You can start to take the virtuosity of Cuban musicians for granted sometimes, especially<br \/>\nwhen they&#8217;re playing material that binds itself in technique,&#8221; he began. &#8220;One example is Chucho<br \/>\nValdes, the pianist who is the dean of Latin jazz.&#8221; The first set of the six-night stand, which ends<br \/>\ntonight, &#8220;was one of the best shows I had heard all year,&#8221; Ratliff went on. The group&#8217;s &#8220;genuinely<br \/>\nfresh&#8221; spontaneity, he pointed out, may have resulted in part from having had only two<br \/>\nrehearsals.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>A friend of mine who was in from Seattle managed to get reservations. I still haven&#8217;t heard<br \/>\nwhether she actually got in. The Vanguard is a small club, and Chucho has a huge following. I<br \/>\nimagine the show was sold out long before Ratliff&#8217;s review. After it ran, the Vanguard simply<br \/>\nstopped answering the phone &#8212; or so it seemed.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>But this morning, I finally managed to get through to a recording. The only way to wrangle a<br \/>\nseat, for anyone who&#8217;s interested, is to get to the club about 30 to 40 minutes before the set starts.<br \/>\nThere are two sets tonight, at 9 and 11.
