When&nbsp;Chucho also surrounds himself with three hand-picked New York<br \/>\nmusicians (especially the sensational Cuban drummer <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.afrojazz.com\/Music_Styles\/Drums___Percussion\/Drums\/DAFNIS_PRIETO\/D\nAFNIS_Biography_English\/dafnis_biography_english.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>Dafnis Prieto<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>) and then invites Mexican-American<br \/>\ntrombone great <A href=\"http:\/\/www.steveturre.com\/\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>Steve Turre<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> to sit in on several numbers, it&#8217;s more<br \/>\nthan auspicious: It&#8217;s over-the-top pleasure, mind-bending musical enlightenment, and worth every<br \/>\nnanosecond of the hour-long wait in a cold drizzle with dozens of fellow &#8220;standbys,&#8221; who like me<br \/>\nwere too dumb or too late to make reservations ahead of time. So, yes, I made it into the 11<br \/>\no&#8217;clock set last night, the final one in Chucho&#8217;s six-night engagement at the Vanguard. I found<br \/>\nmyself in complete agreement with jazz critic Ben Ratliff (<A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20040104.shtml#65286\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>see below<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>) and,&nbsp;against all odds, managed to<br \/>\ncelebrate the turning of the year in style.<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Any year that begins with Cuba&#8217;s incomparable jazz pianist Chucho Valdes at the Village Vanguard has to be an auspicious one.
