Edward S.<br \/>\nMorgan, author of the highly praised biography, <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/search.barnesandnoble.com\/booksearch\/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=52GNHV66DD&#038;sou\nrceid=00001199496983183731&#038;bfdate=12%2D05%2D2003+09%3A27%3A06&#038;isbn=03000953\n25&#038;itm=1\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Benjamin Franklin,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A><br \/>\nand Sterling Professor of History Emeritus at Yale, gives the lie to attacks like <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.observer.com\/pages\/story.asp?ID=6571\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>Ron Rosenbaum&#8217;s<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> that have smeared Vidal as a nut<br \/>\ncase. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>In a tour d&#8217;horizon of eight of Vidal&#8217;s books &#8212;&nbsp;including historical portraits (<A\nhref=\"http:\/\/search.barnesandnoble.com\/bookSearch\/isbnInquiry.asp?sourceid=000011994969831\n83731&#038;ISBN=0300101716&#038;bfdate=12-05-2003+09:27:06\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;Inventing a Nation: Washington, Adams,<br \/>\nJefferson&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>), historical novels ( <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/search.barnesandnoble.com\/bookSearch\/isbnInquiry.asp?sourceid=000011994969831\n94756&#038;ISBN=0375708731&#038;bfdate=12-05-2003+09:29:56\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;Burr,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/search.barnesandnoble.com\/bookSearch\/isbnInquiry.asp?sourceid=000011994969831\n96891&#038;ISBN=0375708766&#038;bfdate=12-05-2003+09:30:29\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;Lincoln&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>)&nbsp;and polemical essays (<A\nhref=\"http:\/\/search.barnesandnoble.com\/booksearch\/isbninquiry.asp?userid=52GNHV66DD&#038;sou\nrceid=00001199496983199215&#038;bfdate=12%2D05%2D2003+09%3A31%3A07&#038;pwb=1&#038;ean=9\n781560255024\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Dreaming War: Blood for Oil and the<br \/>\nCheney-Bush Junta,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/search.barnesandnoble.com\/booksearch\/isbninquiry.asp?userid=52GNHV66DD&#038;sou\nrceid=00001199496983183731&#038;bfdate=12%2D05%2D2003+09%3A27%3A06&#038;pwb=1&#038;ean=9\n781560254058\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Perpetual War for Perpetual Peace: How<br \/>\nWe Got to Be So Hated&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>) &#8212; Morgan makes the case&nbsp;both for<br \/>\nVidal&#8217;s sanity&nbsp;and the vitality of his arguments.<BR><BR>He&nbsp;concedes that Vidal<br \/>\ndelivers his views &#8220;with the certitude we too easily associate with the paranoid; and they are so<br \/>\nrelentlessly one-sided and accusatory, so far outside of what he calls RO, the &#8216;received opinion&#8217; of<br \/>\ninsiders, that he may seem not only anti-government but anti-American.&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Make no mistake,&nbsp;though, it is a charge that Vidal &#8220;rightly rejects,&#8221; and most<br \/>\nimportant, Morgan points out, &#8220;he advances none of [his views] without evidence.&#8221; Can we say<br \/>\nthe same for our Maximum Leader?<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s good to see a serious appraisal of Gore Vidal&#8217;s views about the current state of the Banana Republic under our Maximum Leader and his cronies.
