{"id":473,"date":"2003-11-29T10:36:03","date_gmt":"2003-11-29T18:36:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2003\/11\/the_bold_and_the_bolder\/"},"modified":"2003-11-29T10:36:03","modified_gmt":"2003-11-29T18:36:03","slug":"the_bold_and_the_bolder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2003\/11\/the_bold_and_the_bolder.html","title":{"rendered":"THE BOLD AND THE BOLDER"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>Our Maximum Leader&#8217;s <A href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;cid=676&#038;ncid=716&#038;e=21&#038;u=\/usatoday\/2\n0031128\/ts_usatoday\/11997614\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>secret mission to Iraq<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>, described as bold even by some of his critics, had all <A href=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;cid=578&#038;ncid=578&#038;e=10&#038;u=\/nm\/200311\n28\/ts_nm\/bush_iraq_dc\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>the trappings of a novelty act<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>. Anyone who believes for a minute that the White House arranged it for the troops is living on another planet. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>The lights-out landing, Our Maximum Leader in the cockpit of Air Force One watching the pilots bring him in, his <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/story.news.yahoo.com\/news?tmpl=story&#038;u=\/031128\/ids_photos_india_wl\/ra209417\n7860.jpg\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>impersonation of a cocktail-party<br \/>\nwaiter<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> serving turkey on a platter, the widely reported tear on hischeek (stilted grin notwithstanding) had satirical &#8220;Daily Show&#8221; skit written all over it. (See <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.comedycentral.com\/dailyshow\/\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Mess O&#8217;Potamia.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>) More than an act of bold presidential leadership, it was political farce meant to erase the bad karma of the &#8220;Mission Accomplished&#8221; banner. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>And how about those historical sidebars? The <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/11\/28\/international\/middleeast\/28HIST.html\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>perspective on Our Maximum Leader&#8217;s heroics<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> in The New York Times and on NBC&#8217;s Nightly News recalling Lincoln&#8217;s visits to Antietem and<br \/>\nRichmond during the Civil War, Roosevelt&#8217;s shipboard meeting with Churchill during World War II and Johnson&#8217;s wartime trip to Vietnam were so informative it sounded (even if it wasn&#8217;t) like a story idea fed to the press by the White House PR staff. So what if the Thanksgiving surprise was less scary or momentous? The story gets Our Maximum Leader&#8217;s name in lights on the same marquee: Lincoln, Roosevelt, Johnson and now Bush. That&#8217;s showbiz.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>Consequently, with <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/ap.tbo.com\/ap\/breaking\/MGAFA5ZILND.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>more troops dying than ever<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>, Iraq is becoming <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/11\/29\/international\/middleeast\/29IRAQ.html\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>an obligatory stop<\/FONT><\/EM> <\/B><\/A>on the circuit, much like the TV talk shows. <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/newsArticle.jhtml?type=topNews&#038;storyID=3909692\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>Hilary Clinton stuck her two cents<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> in with a<br \/>\nvisit that lasted 10 hours, which put her in a bolder category than Our Maximum Leader, whose boldness lasted two and a half hours.<\/P><br \/>\n<P><STRONG>POSTSCRIPT from the Good Call department:<\/STRONG> &#8220;Can a stealth holiday trip make us forget the premature &#8216;Mission Accomplished&#8217;?&#8221; That&#8217;s the pullquote of the lead article in the Week in Review section of Sunday&#8217;s New York Times. But you&#8217;ll have to take<br \/>\nmy word for it. The pullquote is writ large above the fold in the print edition. It has disappeared, however, from the <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/11\/30\/weekinreview\/30KIFN.html\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>online version<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>.<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Maximum Leader&#8217;s secret mission to Iraq, described as bold even by some of his critics, had all the trappings of a novelty act.
