&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;(for Heathcote Williams)\n\n\nIt should be news that today marks&nbsp;\nYour fourth Year of departure.&nbsp;\nFor when society loses signals,\n\nOr signposts such as yours, the days warp\nFolding in on themselves, without the words\nTo unravel the mystery of each moment\n\nOr the all too blatant lies behind doors,\nAnd the truth that we are poorer without&nbsp;\nThe richness and way you delivered,&nbsp;\n\nAs you sat In your dotage, fountain pen \nPouring futures onto the calligraphied page \nWith such ease, That every political pose&nbsp;\n\nAnd every social Shift achieved scansion, \nrhyming under you, the verse surgeon whose \nequal vision and zeal cured disease.&nbsp;\n\nFour years ago on this day, you passed&nbsp;\ninto the page your work fashioned with\nAll of the lost, last abandon that jackdawed&nbsp;\n\nAway above youth. I knew you older,&nbsp;\nof course but for those who loved&nbsp;\nand lived with you longer\n\nMay these annual stokings stir embers&nbsp;\nthat see your spirit rise. We seek proof&nbsp;\nthat you ever&nbsp; departed&nbsp; at all. For death&nbsp;\n\nuses dust to edit the life and work&nbsp;\nyou left with us.&nbsp;\nIn this, your eightieth year we\u2019re still&nbsp;\n\nReading and readying too what you write.\nSo grief composes within as memory&nbsp;\nMakes us all poets.
