{"id":429,"date":"2003-11-14T11:06:06","date_gmt":"2003-11-14T19:06:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2003\/11\/out_of_the_mouths_of_babes\/"},"modified":"2003-11-14T11:06:06","modified_gmt":"2003-11-14T19:06:06","slug":"out_of_the_mouths_of_babes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2003\/11\/out_of_the_mouths_of_babes.html","title":{"rendered":"OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><P>I&#8217;ve just seen a video that chills the spine: <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.isratv.com\/video\/filmpmwadsl.asx\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>&#8220;Ask<br \/>\nfor Death.&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> Assuming the edited film clips are sponsored by the<br \/>\nPalestinian Authority, as claimed, and that the translations from the Arabic are accurate, it shows<br \/>\nwhat jihadist brain-washing looks like in children: calm belief that masks a terrifying, homicidal<br \/>\nrationale for religious suicide attacks. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>(If the above link does not&nbsp;work, right-click it and then click &#8220;open in new<br \/>\nwindow.&#8221;)<\/P><br \/>\n<P>The video, directed by Itamar&nbsp;Marcus,&nbsp;begins with a voiceover: &#8220;&#8216;Ask for death&#8217;<br \/>\nis the message the Palestinian Authority has been conveying to its children since the start of<br \/>\nviolence in October 2000.&#8221; It continues with two&nbsp;earnest 11-year-old girls interviewed on<br \/>\nofficial Palestinian television.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>&#8220;Shahada [dying for Allah in battle] is a very, very beautiful thing,&#8221; says Walla. &#8220;Everyone<br \/>\nyearns for Shahada.&#8221;<\/P><br \/>\n<P>&#8220;Of course Shahada is a good thing,&#8221; says Yussra. &#8220;We don&#8217;t want this world, we want the<br \/>\nAfterlife. We benefit not from this life, but from the Afterlife. Oh Lord, I would like to become a<br \/>\nShahid.&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<P>The video clip of 6 minutes and 40 seconds is labeled as the product of <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.pmw.org.il\/new\/\"><B><EM><FONT color=#003399>Palestinian Media<br \/>\nWatch<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>. It is <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.pmw.org.il\/new\/ASK%20FOR%20DEATH.htm\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>explained and outlined here with<br \/>\ndocumentation<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>&nbsp;(including fuller quotations from both<br \/>\ngirls).<\/P><br \/>\n<P>What is peculiar, which&nbsp;made me suspicious of the video&#8217;s origin &#8212; though not of its<br \/>\nbasic validity &#8212; is that the <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.pmwatch.org\/pmw\/mediocrity\/editcalls.asp\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>Palestine Media Watch<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> I&#8217;ve been aware of is a<br \/>\npro-Palestine, anti-Israel advocacy group associated with Noam Chomsky, while the video is<br \/>\nobviously pro-Israel and anti-Palestine. <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Notice the difference in the names of the groups. My feeling was that <STRONG>Palestinian<br \/>\nMedia Watch<\/STRONG> had&nbsp;co-opted the name of its opposing site in the propaganda<br \/>\nwar. But, in fact, it&#8217;s the other way around.&nbsp;The pro-Israeli PMW associated with Marcus<br \/>\nwas established in 1996.
