The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?client=safari&amp;rls=en&amp;q=diane+di+prima+obituaries&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8\">obituaries <\/a>have poured in, paying tribute to a life devoted to writing\u2014her own and others&#8217;.  She was a poet, editor, publisher, memoirist, novelist and, not least, a social activist. I believe she will be remembered most for her poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an <a href=\"http:\/\/internationaltimes.it\/the-skinny-on-the-beats-with-z-collection-author-jan-herman\/\">interview published in 2016<\/a> in <em>IT: International Times, The Magazine of Resistance<\/em>, the literary biographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hilaryholladay\">Hilary Holladay<\/a> asked me about her:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Holladay:&nbsp;<\/strong>Did you get to know Diane di Prima when you were editing&nbsp;<em>Earthquake<\/em>, your experimental literary magazine? Seems like what you were doing with&nbsp;<em>Earthquake<\/em>&nbsp;paralleled what she and LeRoi Jones were doing with&nbsp;<em>The Floating Bear<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Herman:<\/strong>&nbsp;I\u2019ve never met Diane di Prima. But even before I got to City Lights [in 1966], I was aware of&nbsp;<em>Floating Bear.&nbsp;<\/em>I first read it at the 8<sup>th<\/sup>Street Bookshop in Greenwich Village, when I was clerking there. It\u2019s flattering of you to make the comparison. But&nbsp;<em>Floating Bear&nbsp;<\/em>broke the ground and lasted for a decade, becoming as much of an avant-garde institution as any mimeo possibly could.&nbsp;<em>Earthquake<\/em>&nbsp;lasted only a couple of years.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Holladay:&nbsp;<\/strong>I\u2019m also curious to know what you think of di Prima\u2019s poetry.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Herman:<\/strong>&nbsp;What I like is its simplicity.
