The Dallas Morning News<br \/>\nrecently bought into the tabs-for-dummies trend with Quick,&nbsp;which targets what it<br \/>\ncalls&nbsp;&#8220;time-starved&#8221; young readers.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>In fact, it&#8217;s not the first Quick to hit the streets, according to <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20031109.shtml#59890\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>the poet and journalist Leon Freilich<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A>. During the<br \/>\nearly 1950s there was a previous&nbsp;incarnation called Quick magazine, which &#8220;promised to tie<br \/>\nup the nation&#8217;s week&#8217;s news succinctly on pages little bigger than a cigarette pack.&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<BLOCKQUOTE>The following story made the media rounds: Quick commissioned<br \/>\nlong-winded novelist James Michener to visit Egypt and write an in-depth article about its<br \/>\npolitics, economy and prospects in the changing post-WWII world. Michener was in Luxor when,<br \/>\ntwo months into his assignment, he received a telegram from the magazine: &#8220;Need Egypt piece<br \/>\nfast. Keep to eight words.&#8221; How long did Quick last? About as long as a carton of cigarettes in<br \/>\nthe stained fingers of a nicotine junkie.<\/BLOCKQUOTE><br \/>\n<P><\/P><br \/>\n<P>Freilich told that&nbsp;tale to Jim Romenesko. It was too&nbsp;much fun&nbsp;not to<br \/>\nrepeat. Now here&#8217;s the game,&nbsp;which has&nbsp;nothing to do with tabs for dummies: How<br \/>\ngood are you at reading faces?
