Not being privy to the machinations of the 18-member Swedish Academy, I&#8217;d be willing to bet on Philip Roth largely because a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thezreview.co.uk\/posters\/h\/humanstainthe.htm\"><b><em><font color=\"#003399\">star-studded movie<\/font><\/em><\/b><\/a> of his 2001 novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0375726349\/qid=1065019317\/sr=1-1\/ref=\nsr_1_1\/103-3798977-4556652?v=glance&amp;s=books\"><b><em><font color=\"#003399\">&#8220;The Human Stain,&#8221;<\/font><\/em><\/b><\/a> is coming out later this month, and it would be a shame to waste that kind of publicity. Rival candidates who&#8217;ve been touted &#8212; among them, Janet Frame of New Zealand, Inger Christensen of Denmark or Tomas Transtroemer of Sweden &#8212; can&#8217;t offer such high-powered Hollywood synergy; not even J.M. Coetzee of South Africa, who&#8217;s also reported to be on the short list, although the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.damascus-online.com\/se\/bio\/said_ali_ahmad.htm\"><b><em><font color=\"#003399\">Syrian poet Ali Ahmad Said<\/font><\/em><\/b><\/a> (better known as Adonis) could give Roth a run for the money on that nickname alone. As a Syrian modernist with a\u00a0PhD,\u00a0moreover, Adonis may have politics working in his favor. Roth, as an American who&#8217;s also Jewish, definitely does not. But could <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywood.com\/photogalleries\/gallery1\/id\/1725737\"><b><em><font color=\"#003399\">Nicole Kidman, Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris and Gary Sinise<\/font><\/em><\/b><\/a> star in one of Adonis&#8217;s poems?
