My staff of thousands reminds me it&#8217;s been a while since I&#8217;ve paid<br \/>\nany attention to Gee Dubya Shrub. The reason, easy to understand, may be summed up in two<br \/>\nwords: <EM>Der Gropenfuhrer<\/EM>. Culifornia&#8217;s lemmingmeister has loomed so large he&#8217;s<br \/>\nedged li&#8217;l Shrub out of the frame. This morning, however, I didn&#8217;t have to look far to see that li&#8217;l<br \/>\nShrub has managed to edge himself back in.<\/P><br \/>\n<P>My two favorite punching bags met yesterday and proceded to spin like tops. Li&#8217;l Shrub<br \/>\nbriefed the press afterward with prepared wisecracks about how much he and <EM>Der<br \/>\nGrope<\/EM> had in common &#8212; marrying well, speaking English badly and big biceps. I don&#8217;t<br \/>\nthink his speech writer intended any reference to family values and concern for the culture,<br \/>\nor&nbsp;for physical culture, but there you have it. Meantime <EM>Der Grope<\/EM> seemed to<br \/>\nget his spin signals wrong. <A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2003\/10\/17\/national\/17ARNO.html\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>&#8220;According to accounts on both sides,&#8221;<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> today&#8217;s New<br \/>\nYork Times reported, &#8220;little of substance was discussed.&#8221; But <EM>Der Grope<\/EM> told the<br \/>\npress they spoke &#8220;at great length about the problems of California.&#8221; <\/P><br \/>\n<P>Whom to believe? I suppose it&#8217;s possible that when li&#8217;l Shrub matched biceps with <EM>Der<br \/>\nGrope<\/EM>, it was code for comparing the California and U.S. budget deficits. Or maybe it was<br \/>\ncode for the&nbsp;<A\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/archives20031005.shtml#55030\"><B><EM><FONT\ncolor=#003399>$9-billion energy rip-off<\/FONT><\/EM><\/B><\/A> of California by Enron and<br \/>\nother Texas-based corporations. But I really doubt that. A 15-minute one-on-one, plus 30 minutes<br \/>\nin the same room with advisers, and another 15 minutes alone together in li&#8217;l Shrub&#8217;s limo doesn&#8217;t<br \/>\nsound like a meeting of substance so much as a melding of sweet nothings.<\/P><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m falling down on the job.
