{"id":37497,"date":"2019-12-30T12:20:21","date_gmt":"2019-12-30T17:20:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/?p=37497"},"modified":"2019-12-30T14:31:26","modified_gmt":"2019-12-30T19:31:26","slug":"nyt-magazines-designers-push-the-envelope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2019\/12\/nyt-magazines-designers-push-the-envelope.html","title":{"rendered":"NYT Magazine&#8217;s Designers Push the Envelope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">The print edition of the New York Times this morning made note of the &#8220;Corrections We Remembered in 2019&#8221; (see the renamed, redesigned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/12\/30\/reader-center\/corrections-of-the-year-2019.html?searchResultPosition=1\">online version<\/a>), pointing out that correcting a mistake is &#8220;more than a procedural obligation &#8230; it&#8217;s &#8216;an ethical responsibility.'&#8221; In that spirit I might as well point out that The Times can screw up badly when its highly trained and forward-looking designers push the envelope too far, particularly in the print edition of the magazine. Have a look at this layout. Meanwhile, it has gone in for typographical overprinting so often on the magazine covers that it has become a fetish. Sometimes the fetish looks great and makes an editorial point.
