{"id":366,"date":"2003-08-28T11:42:55","date_gmt":"2003-08-28T18:42:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2003\/08\/velvet_dreams\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T11:24:59","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:24:59","slug":"velvet_dreams","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2003\/08\/velvet_dreams.html","title":{"rendered":"VELVET DREAMS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now for really serious things:\u00a0a\u00a0magazine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2003\/SHOWBIZ\/08\/27\/mental.floss\/index.html\"><em><strong><font color=\"#003399\">swimsuit issue<\/font><\/strong><\/em><\/a> starring Albert Einstein, which needs no further comment, and tonight&#8217;s broadcast of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/life\/music\/awards\/mtvmusicawards\/2003-08-27-vma-20_x.htm\"> <em><strong><font color=\"#003399\">20th MTV Video Music Awards<\/font><\/strong><\/em><\/a>, which has starred so many media-made creatures that the <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/c\/0\/176\/187\/ssMain.asp?fmt=&amp;sld=0&amp;res=inline&amp;0ss=N\"><font color=\"#003399\">ever-reliable celebrity site<\/font><\/a><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0MSNBC.com insists on offering them more free publicity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ryan McGee, a former Harvard man with a beautifully named Weblog,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ryan-mcgee.com\/blog\/\"><font color=\"#003399\"><em><strong>Wading in The Velvet Sea<\/strong><\/em><\/font><\/a>, has followed the MTV Awards for a long time &#8212; maybe too long. It seems to have&nbsp; infected his brain with fame fever. The other day, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ryan-mcgee.com\/blog\/archives\/000392.html#000392 \"><font color=\"#003399\"><em><strong>he had this to say<\/strong><\/em><\/font><\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Roughly a year ago, I &#8220;hit it big&#8221; with a rundown of the Video Music Awards.<br>\nIt was my first taste of widespread readership, and the positive feedback I received basically<br>\ntransformed my blog into what it is today. So I know all too well, even in my miniscule version of<br>\ncelebrity, how intoxicating it can be, and why you strive towards it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without question, McGee feels the pulse of pop culture in his finger tips.
