CARL WEISSNER (1940-2012) was the preeminent German translator of dissident writers such as Charles Bukowski, William S. Burroughs, J.G. Ballard, Ken Kesey, Bob Dylan, Allen Ginsberg, Frank Zappa, and Nelson Algren, having published more than 100 books of theirs and others. But he also wrote  books of his own,<\/a> both in German and English.  On Jan. 23,  the anniversary of his death, Phantom Outlaw Editions will make available a tale he wrote toward the end of his life, “Le Regard d’Autrui.”<\/a>  Why he gave a French title to a story written in English is not clear. Perhaps because of the setting. What is crystal clear, however, is that it shows him to have been a master storyteller as good as any of the celebrated writers who were beneficiaries of his masterly translations.<\/p>\n\n\n
