I thought of it as a demonstration of the trombonist&#8217;s virtuosity. Then I read the composers&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osborne-conant.org\/Pond.htm\">general description<\/a> of the piece, explaining its origin, in 1976, and how it was composed. <\/p>\n<p><center>&#8220;Pond&#8221; was first performed in 1977 at the Manhattan School of Music.<br \/> Now they&#8217;ve recorded it in a new performance at their studio in Taos, New Mexico.<\/center><br \/>\n<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kKl3FMGVGzA\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>At the time of its creation, we were studying Zen Buddhism, and were especially involved with the Zen shakuhachi master Goro Yamaguchi\u2019s 1969 recording entitled \u201cA Bell Ringing In the Empty Sky.\u201d <em>&#8212; Abbie Conant &#038; William Osborne<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1KILSpW70qk\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>And now I get it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I heard it for the first time, I didn&#8217;t know what to make of it.
