I’ve discovered that my recent blogpost, An Experiment in Reading<\/a>, doesn’t work on mobile devices. The gizmo that embeds the book (to let you turn the pages) gets hung up. So here’s a static presentation of George Gissing’s preface.

There’s more, of course. But I’ll leave it there. You may have guessed that The Private Papers of Henry Ryecroft<\/em> is a total piece of fiction — it turns out to be a novel presented as excerpts from a diary found among the papers — and that Gissing, who was a prolific, underrated novelist<\/a>, was really writing about himself even if Ryecroft is not a self-portrait.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
