I\u2019m sure that more people have read <em>On the Road<\/em> than ever read \u201cHowl.\u201d But Ginsberg may be more significant as a writer than Kerouac in terms of literary impact because of what I believe is the long-lasting influence of \u201cHowl\u201d on poets and poetry itself. I don\u2019t think <em>On the Road<\/em> has had an equivalent influence on novelists, notwithstanding its popularity.<\/p>\n<p>Both were major countercultural forces, but it seems to me that \u201cfirst thought, best thought\u201d works better for poetry than it does for prose. Yes, Ginsberg took that idea from Kerouac. And I suppose there\u2019s been a lot of fiction writers who\u2019ve used Kerouac\u2019s spontaneous prose as a model for letting it all hang out. But the way he rambles on (so \u201csweet and oddball,\u201d to steal a phrase of Norman Mailer\u2019s) gets too damn boring.
