Algren was the author of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.com\/search\/?fa=search&#038;searchtext=nelson+algren\">more than a dozen books<\/a>. Born on March 28, 1909, in Detroit, he lived in Chicago for most of his life. In 1975, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2010\/08\/nelson_algren_in_his_habitat.html\">he left Chicago for New Jersey<\/a>, then moved to Sag Harbor, N.Y., where <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2006\/03\/forever_and_a_day.html\">he died on May 9, 1981<\/a>,  and where he is buried. I&#8217;m betting his two best-known novels &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.com\/book\/?GCOI=58322100845710\"><em>The Man With the Golden Arm<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.powells.com\/biblio\/1-9780374525323-1\"><em>A Walk on the Wild Side<\/em><\/a> &#8212; will last longer than any of the novels by Mailer, Vidal, Updike, Cheever, Kerouac, Vonnegut, Pynchon, DeLillo, Roth, Bellow, Doctorow, or Bukowski.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The hard necessity of bringing the judge on the bench down into the dock has been the peculiar responsibility of the writer in all ages of man.&#8221; &#8212; Nelson Algren He would have been 102 today.
