{"id":1784,"date":"2010-07-05T11:47:28","date_gmt":"2010-07-05T18:47:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/wp\/2010\/07\/bach_friends_heads_west\/"},"modified":"2010-07-05T11:47:28","modified_gmt":"2010-07-05T18:47:28","slug":"bach_friends_heads_west","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2010\/07\/bach_friends_heads_west.html","title":{"rendered":"<em>BACH &#038; friends<\/em> Heads to San Francisco"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2010\/03\/bachs_brilliant_friends.html\">Mike Lawrence&#8217;s two-hour documentary<\/a> &#8212; featuring <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_-bWbv-bVRs\">Simone Dinnerstein<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-Qyz5QPsJmE\">Emerson String Quartet<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lJahQRJ0Tq8\">Joshua Bell<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Zyw2FxFSPJM\">Philip Glass<\/a>, to name just a few &#8212; has its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfcv.org\/article\/embach-friendsem-movie-premiere\">San Francisco premiere<\/a> on July 14 at the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/sundancecinemas.com\/kabuki.html\">Sundance Cinema Kabuki Theater<\/a>.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DngQF49wikY\">Patty Gessner<\/a>, executive producer of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfcv.org\/\">San Francisco Classical Voice<\/a>, set up the screening as a fund-raiser for the SFCV Web site, which was founded in 1998 and which sees itself as &#8220;the hub for classical music&#8221; in the Bay Area. (Gessner, the former director of marketing for the San Francisco Symphony, is &#8220;a big fan&#8221; of the film, Lawrence says.) The premiere&#8217;s media sponsor will be  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kdfc.com\/\">KDFC-FM<\/a>, said to be\u00a0the most popular classical station in the country.<br \/>\n<center><object width=\"414\" height=\"249\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/kYvXtAIf-Bk&amp;hl=en_US&amp;fs=1\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><\/object><\/center><br \/>\nMeanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wnet\/gperf\/\">GREAT PERFORMANCES<\/a> is considering the film for a PBS broadcast, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sonymasterworks.com\/\">Sony Masterworks<\/a> is exploring the possibility of distributing the DVD.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Y2a_mls-mCo\/\">Anya Grundmann<\/a>, the executive producer of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/music\/\">NPR Music<\/a>, has requested a DVD. &#8220;And thanks to <a href=\"http:\/\/web.media.mit.edu\/~mike\/\">Mike Hawley<\/a>&#8216;s friendship with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Jobs\">Steve Jobs<\/a>,&#8221; Lawrence says, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/itunes\/whats-on\/\">Apple&#8217;s iTunes store<\/a> is considering streaming the documentary.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Whatever happens with those prospects, <em>Bach &#038; friends<\/em> heads back East in the fall. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peabody.jhu.edu\/home.php\">The Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University<\/a>, Lawrence&#8217;s alma mater,\u00a0will sponsor the Baltimore premiere at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thecharles.com\/\">Charles Theater<\/a> on Oct. 3.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Postscript:<\/strong> Michael Zwiebach&#8217;s interview with the filmmaker &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/sfcv.org\/events-calendar\/artist-spotlight\/michael-lawrence-shooting-and-loving-bach\">&#8220;Shooting, and Loving, Bach&#8221;<\/a> &#8212; pretty much tells it all, and it&#8217;s fun to read.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mike Lawrence&#8217;s two-hour documentary &#8212; featuring Simone Dinnerstein, the Emerson String Quartet, Joshua Bell, and Philip Glass, to name just a few &#8212; has its San Francisco premiere on July 14 at the\u00a0Sundance Cinema Kabuki Theater.
