I&#8217;m told all profits will go to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boxingscene.com\/?m=show&#038;id=28458\">Berto Dynasty Foundation<\/a> to benefit <a href=\"http:\/\/projectmedishare.wordpress.com\/about\/\">Project Medishare<\/a> for Haitian earthquake relief.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fighter-Still-Remains-George-Kimball\/dp\/0979994756\/ref=ntt_at_ep_dpi_7\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt title=\"'The Fight Still Remains' cover painting 'The Knockout' \u00a9 1967 by LeRoy Neiman\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/assets_c\/2010\/06\/FighterStillRemainsCOVER-thumb-175x269-15757.jpg\" width=\"175\" height=\"269\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"float: left; margin: 0 20px 20px 0;\" \/><\/a>The fact that the book has been brought out by an obscure press in collaboration with a fight promoter (who, for all I know, may be one and the same) probably means that no major publisher would touch it. It also means &#8212; pardon my cynicism &#8212; that the book is not likely to get much exposure and won&#8217;t earn much in the way of profits. But every penny for Haitian earthquake victims counts, right?<br \/>\nIn any case, readers who buy it are shitsure going to get their money&#8217;s worth. Selected and edited by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/George-Kimball\/e\/B001JPCMW4\/ref=ntt_dp_epwbk_0\">George Kimball<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/John-Schulian\/e\/B001KI6VC2\">John Schulian<\/a>, with an introduction by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tajblues.com\/discography\/bio.html\">Taj Mahal<\/a>, the anthology celebrates &#8220;boxing in poetry and song from Ali to Zevon.&#8221;<br \/>\nSelections include a wide range of choices, everything from &#8220;The World&#8217;s Shortest Poem,&#8221; by Muhammad Ali (&#8220;Me \/ Whee!&#8221;), and Paul Simon&#8217;s song lyrics for &#8220;The Boxer,&#8221; to Ishmael Reed&#8217;s &#8220;White Hope,&#8221; Warren Zevon&#8217;s &#8220;Boom Boom Mancini,&#8221; and &#8220;Ready to Rumble Rag,&#8221; a song by Kimball and Tom Paxton that consists of nothing but boxers&#8217; names &#8212; or rather the monikers invented for them by fight fans and headline writers:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\">Marvelous Marvin Gaseous Cassius Gentleman Jim<br \/>\nHomicide Hank &#8230; Smokin&#8217; Joe<br \/>\nBrown Bomber Little Red Pink Panther Al Blue Lewis &#8230;<br \/>\nBlack Rhino<br \/>\nNeon Leon Iron Mike Toy Bulldog Fainting Phil &#8230; Jersey Joe<br \/>\nWild Bull of the Pampas Bronx Bull Baby Bull Atomic Bull<br \/>\n&#8230; White Buffalo &#8230;<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nKid Dynamite Kid Chocolate Dixie Kid Kid Diamond &#8230;<br \/>Baby Joe<br \/>Pretty Boy Golden Boy Honeyboy Schoolboy &#8230;<br \/>Boston Strong Boy<br \/>Hit Man Sandman Magic Man Pac Man &#8230; Cinderella Man<br \/>Ice Man Matchstick Man Orchid Man Quiet Man &#8230;<br \/>Ding-a-ling Man<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>There are also short prose excerpts from, among others, Leonard Gardner&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/City-California-Fiction-Leonard-Gardner\/dp\/0520206576\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1277052696&#038;sr=1-1\"><em>Fat City<\/em><\/a>, J.P. Dunleavy&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/History-Ginger-Man-Dramatic-Contemporary\/dp\/B00269S5MI\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1277052731&#038;sr=1-3\"><em>The History of the Ginger Man<\/em><\/a>, Elmore Leonard&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Out-Sight-Novel-Elmore-Leonard\/dp\/B003F76J5A\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1277052806&#038;sr=1-3\"><em>Out of Sight<\/em><\/a>, Pete Hamill&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/FLESH-BLOOD-Pete-Hamill\/dp\/B000ILLELK\/ref=sr_1_24?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1277052932&#038;sr=1-24\"><em>Flesh and Blood<\/em><\/a>, and Philip Roth&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Facts-Novelists-Autobiography-Philip-Roth\/dp\/0679749055\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1277052991&#038;sr=1-1\"><em>The Facts,<\/em><\/a> and even something by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ted_Berrigan\">Ted Berrigan<\/a>, a poet you would not normally associate with the sweet science.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/Berrigan.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt title=\"Ted Berrigan's 'Arthur Cravan: Poete et Boxeur', excerpted in 'The Fighter Still Remains' [Fore Angels Press and DIBELLA Entertainment, 2010]\" src=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/assets_c\/2010\/06\/Berrigan-thumb-414x683-15760.jpg\" width=\"414\" height=\"683\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center; display: block; margin: 0 auto 20px;\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>The Fighter Still Remains<\/em> came about when Kimball and Schulian finished editing a different anthology, <em>At the Fights: American Writers on Boxing<\/em>, to be published by the Library of America in 2011. &#8220;Our dream for that book was to include fiction, poetry, song lyrics, and screenplay excerpts as well as nonfiction,&#8221; Schulian writes in an e-mail message. &#8220;But even at more than 500 pages, the book turned out to be best suited for nonfiction. It was George who had the idea to gather what you find in <em>The Fighter Still Remains<\/em>. The biggest heart of all belongs to him. My contributions were minimal.
