Some of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2006\/03\/wild_side_still_rocks.html\">my own comments<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2006\/03\/forever_and_a_day.html\">memories,<\/a> too.<br \/>\nA few years ago, I mentioned that Nelson&#8217;s 28-page poem, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2004\/03\/calling_all_publishers.html\">&#8220;Ode to Kissassville,&#8221;<\/a> once appeared as an epilogue in 100 copies of a 1961 reprint edition of &#8220;Chicago: City on the Make,&#8221; but  never anywhere else. It should have been included in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/detail\/-\/0226013855\/qid=1078513145\/sr=1-1\/ref=sr_1_1\/002-0403379-8879245?v=glance&#038;s=books\">50th anniversary edition<\/a> that the University of Chicago Press reprinted in 2001. It wasn&#8217;t.<br \/>\nMaybe it will appear in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenstories.com\/book\/?GCOI=58322100991860\">&#8220;Entrapment and Other Writings,&#8221;<\/a> due out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Entrapment-Other-Writings-Nelson-Algren\/dp\/1583228683\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1238258660&#038;sr=1-1\">any day now<\/a> from Seven Stories Press and said to contain an &#8220;unfinished novel and previously unpublished or uncollected stories, poems, and essays.&#8221; Hope so, especially since the title of the collection seems to be taken from a stanza in the ode about two undercover cops &#8220;entrapping two derelicts into a feeble attempt at mugging &#8230;&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Show me another city so proud to be alive<br \/>\nThat it can fit two citizen-dress men into false bras<br \/>\nAnd tight gowns<br \/>\nThen send them down Skid Row bravely swinging handbags<br \/>\nAnd hips rolling.<br \/>\nWhat New York&#8217;s police would like to do, Chicago&#8217;s really can<br \/>\nIn that contented evening hour when we learn to Trap Our Man.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Entrapment indeed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nelson Algren, most quotable of writers, was born 100 years ago today.
