It&#8217;s old news by now. But I&#8217;m still amazed. (Actually, someone else chose it.) Now here it is in <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.artsjournal.com%2Fherman%2F2006%2F11%2Fwilliam_styron_rip.html&#038;hl=en&#038;ie=UTF-8&#038;sl=en&#038;tl=es\">Spanish<\/a>, in <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.artsjournal.com%2Fherman%2F2006%2F11%2Fwilliam_styron_rip.html&#038;hl=en&#038;ie=UTF-8&#038;sl=en&#038;tl=fr\">French<\/a>, in <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.artsjournal.com%2Fherman%2F2006%2F11%2Fwilliam_styron_rip.html&#038;hl=en&#038;ie=UTF-8&#038;sl=en&#038;tl=de\">German<\/a> &#8230; OK, how about <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.artsjournal.com%2Fherman%2F2006%2F11%2Fwilliam_styron_rip.html&#038;hl=en&#038;ie=UTF-8&#038;sl=en&#038;tl=zh-TW\">Chinese<\/a>?<br \/>\n<span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\" style=\"display: inline;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/herman\/2006\/11\/william_styron_rip.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt title=\"William Styron. If the translated text is from a Web page, you can mouse over any particular sentence and have it highlighted in a pop-up box in the original language.<br \/>\nHow good are the translations? How should I know? I don&#8217;t read Chinese. But I do have some rusty French, some rudimentary Spanish, and a faint recognition of German &#8212; and they looked intelligible to me.<br \/>\n<strong>Postscript:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/supervert.com\/\">Supervert<\/a> writes: &#8220;Google&#8217;s translation service is just one of the many reasons they approach being a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thechurchofgoogle.org\/Scripture\/Proof_Google_Is_God.html\">technological equivalent<\/a> of the old-time conception of divinity. All-knowing and able to speak in tongues&#8230; Kicks the shit out of me too. And it all started with an algorithm cooked up by two dorky grad students in a dorm room.&#8221;<br \/>\n<strong>PPS:<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osborne-conant.org\/bios.htm#william\">Bill Osborne<\/a> replies, &#8220;I always thought God was a bit dumb.&#8221; And adds, &#8220;<em>Hier are sum dokumenten you can tast the Programm mit.<\/em>&#8221; He offers a comparison of the Googlematic <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.osborne-conant.org%2Ftrombone-philosophy.htm&#038;hl=en&#038;ie=UTF-8&#038;sl=en&#038;tl=de\">German<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.osborne-conant.org%2Ftrombone-philosophy.htm&#038;hl=en&#038;ie=UTF-8&#038;sl=en&#038;tl=it\">Italian<\/a> translations of this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osborne-conant.org\/trombone-philosophy.htm\">original text in English<\/a> with the idiomatic <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osborne-conant.org\/trombone-philo-German.htm\">German<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.osborne-conant.org\/trombone-philo-Italian.htm\">Italian<\/a> translations. But he concedes that &#8220;even if full of errors and sometimes misleading,&#8221; the Google service &#8220;will be a boon for an extensive correspondence I have going with someone who only speaks Spanish.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I don&#8217;t know what took me so long.
