One section highlights <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/WarCard\/Default.aspx?src=project_home&#038;context=key_false_statements&#038;id=946\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Key False Statements<\/strong><\/font><\/a>.<br \/>\nResearchers Charles Lewis and Mark Reading-Smith <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/WarCard\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>write:<\/strong><\/font><\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>President George W. Bush and seven of his administration&#8217;s top officials, including Vice President Dick Cheney, National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice, and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, made at least 935 false statements in the two years following September 11, 2001, about the national security threat posed by Saddam Hussein&#8217;s Iraq. Nearly five years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, an exhaustive examination of the record shows that the statements\u00a0were part of an orchestrated campaign that effectively galvanized public opinion and, in the process, led the nation to war under decidedly false pretenses.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/ldw164.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt title=\"'Torturer? Moi?' &#169; by Joshua Brown [from Life During Wartime, Dec. 7, 2005]' CLICK TO ENLARGE\" src=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/images\/ldw164.jpg\" width=200 align=left border=0 \/><\/a>The center <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publicintegrity.org\/about\/about.aspx?act=mission\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>describes itself<\/strong><\/font><\/a> as &#8220;a nonprofit, nonpartisan, non-advocacy, independent journalism organization&#8221; designed &#8220;to produce original investigative journalism about significant public issues to make institutional power more transparent and accountable.&#8221;<br \/>\nThe New York Times <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/01\/23\/washington\/23database.html?_r=1&#038;ref=world&#038;oref=slogin\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>reports<\/strong><\/font><\/a> this morning in its news story on the database: &#8220;There is no startling new information in the archive, because all the documents have been published previously. But the new computer tool is remarkable for its scope, and its replay of the crescendo of statements that led to the war.&#8221;<br \/>\nThat is true. But the old info is plenty startling, doncha think? I&#8217;d bet Joshua Brown thinks so. Consider his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/ldw164.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>diary entry for Dec. 7, 2005<\/strong><\/font><\/a>, above, from his blog <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/ldw2008.htm\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Life During Wartime<\/strong><\/font><\/a>. It&#8217;s two years old, sure, but as startling as ever. And the words &#8212; <i>pace<\/i>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tartcity.com\/misspiggy.html\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>Miss Piggy<\/strong><\/font><\/a> &#8212; are pure Condi. Even if they don&#8217;t turn up in the database quoted precisely that way.<br \/>\n(Not incidentally, an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.joshbrownnyc.com\/2008exhibition.htm\" class=inlne target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>exhibition<\/strong><\/font><\/a> of four years of Brown&#8217;s diary entries, from 2003 to 2007, is on view through Feb. 29 at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gc.cuny.edu\/\" class=inline target=new\"><strong><font color=#003399>The Graduate Center, CUNY,<\/strong><\/font><\/a> where he teaches history and directs the American Social History Project\/Center for Media and Learning.
